 Adam Strange
Adam Strange is always transported nearly instantly to a spot on the surface of Rann near its large city of Ranagar.
Although Adam is depicted at normal size, he tends to be dwarfed by such giant figures as the robot here, and the giant Adam Strange on the cover of "The Duel of the Two Adam Stranges" (1960).
Adam eventually uses the zeta-beam cycle to escape from the scientist and his trap: this is typical Gardner Fox construction, in which one cycle (the zeta-beam) is used to escape from another cycle (the new teleportation system).

Rann-Thanagar War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Donna Troy's assembled heroes are working to keep the peace between the two warring forces, when Adam Strange receives a message from Tigorr of the Omega Men.
He leads Strange, along with Hawkman and Hawkgirl, to a stray Thanagarian surveillance satellite, which has documented footage of Superboy forcing Rann and Thanagar to collide, and thus, go to war.
Though the satellite is soon lost in the chaotic environment, Strange has an idea to gather the heads of each faction so that they might stop fighting amongst themselves and work together against the new cosmic threat.

Recycling Bin 48 - The Roots of Adam Strange (Jun 2001)
Strange operated in a sanitized late-fifties interpretation of twenties space-opera, while Carter, barely clad but for a weapon harness, contended with muscle-powered weapons, against bellicose multi-limbed beasts from the waning indigenous Martian biosphere.
Strange probably succeeded because the peculiar combination of (admittedly borrowed) elements that form the backbone of his concept provide a very human set of themes to thrust against strange backdrops of alien worlds.
Strange, as their heir, had more to build upon - a later, sometimes more introspective, model of the hero - which allowed him to use the tools that made the earlier source concepts work in a way more meaningful to Eisenhower- and Kennedy-era audiences.

Adam Strange. (The Return of..) - The CHUD.COM Message Boards
Essentially, Adam Strange is yet another rung in the ladder created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and his beloved John Carter of Mars, and carried on by the likes of Flash Gordon and even more obscure characters like Adam Thane, and Commander Craig.
At this point, Strange is a dull and beatdown drunk and we don't know why, but Diggle lets you in on his current situation, kickstarts the plot, and manages establish a theme w/ one particular line of dialogue (I presume).
There's a one panel gag where the coat Adam's seems to have a fairly distinctive collar, and he appears to be making some marvelous occult hand gestures.

Not only is this shaping up to be one of the most fun comics on the market, it's one of the most beautiful and one of the most interesting, tackling a character and subgenre that would seem hopelessly outdated in 2004 but is instead modern and flashy without losing all of its retro charm.
Adam Strange is not an easy character to tackle.
He's a thinker, but Strange never stops to mope or pontificate, he's always moving as he's thinking, blasting his way out of a tight situation so that he can get to what's important, saving the girl and saving the day.

COMICON.com: GIANT SIZE MANDINGO # 5 Awesome Adam Strange!
Therein lay the appeal of the stories: Adam Strange was a thinker-as-hero, and while he proved that he could kick his fair share of extra-terrestrial hind-quarters, it was his thoughtful approach that turned me on as a kid, along with the fact that the resident hot chick was just as adept as the protagonist.
All of this adventure and between-the-lines passion had to have a price though, and Strange's bane was the fact that the effects of the Zeta beam wore off after a time, returning an unwilling Adam to earth and tearing him away from his one true love.
After realizing something's wrong, Strange enlists the help of some “influential friends” in finding out what happened and after six months of wondering he is informed by a clearly saddened Superman that Rann's primary star went supernova with no warning, erasing the planet without a trace.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News - The Comic Wire
Diggle's been a fan of Adam Strange for some time and reveals the stories that influenced him, saying, "Like a lot of readers, my first introduction to the character was the two-part 'Swamp Thing' story by Alan Moore, followed by the 'Man Of Two Worlds' mini-series.
The richness of the Adam Strange mythos has made the character a cult favorite, with the Buck Rogers-style space adventures, the high-tech gizmos, the intergalactic romance story and the politics of Rann itself.
Though "Adam Strange" is scheduled as a mini-series, don't think that Diggle wouldn't be happy to tackle the character again at some point.

Schwartz found himself editing titles such as Rex, The Wonder Dog and Jimmy Wakely (featuring the cowboy movie star); but he was able to add science fiction comics to the roster, including Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space.
Infantino, Anderson and Fox teamed up with Schwartz to produce Adam Strange in Mystery In Space, which Joe Brancatelli, in The World Encyclopedia Of Comics, called "perhaps the best sci-fi strip ever to appear in comic books".
In 1956, National's publisher, Jack Liebowitz, was persuaded to launch Showcase, which would allow his editors the chance to try out new ideas to see how they went down with an audience, without the risk of putting out a new title.
