  Adam-Troy Castro:  An Alien Darkness
Castro makes wide use of a variety of classic film actors who would have graced the late night screen when he was in his formative years.
Castro clearly writes science fiction because he is a fan of the genre, and an educated fan at that.
Castro's writing does not easily lend itself to pigeon-holing, which may be the reason that, although he has received Hugo and Nebula nominations, his writing still has not managed to make the impression on the general reading public which it should have.

Fictionwise eBooks: An Alien Darkness by Adam-Troy Castro
Adam needn't worry about that; I talk so much about "Clearance to Land" because it was my first experience with his particular form of genius, and it hit me like a lightning bolt.
Not just Adam's eyes, nor even his characters' eyes, but the eyes of a supernatural being who can see right to the core of a situation and tell you not only what's really going on, but what it means to you.
Perhaps the best description of Adam's stories comes from one of his own characters, who describes the situation she is in as "...something that pops the rivets of reality as we know it...."

 Alibris: Castro
Castro teaches how to create useful, workable scripts from scratch or to adapt existing scripts as quickly as possible.
by Castro, Peter, and Huber, Michael E. This fifth edition covers the basics of marine biology and takes a global, non-regional perspective to emphasize that the world's oceans and seas are an integrated system that cannot be understood by looking in any one person's own backyard.
Fidel Castro himself writes with candor and affection of his relationship with Ernesto Che Guevara, documenting the Argentinian-born doctor's extraordinary bond with Cuba from the revolution's early days to Che's final guerrilla expeditions to Africa and Bolivia.

Tangled Strings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
More striking still is the palette Castro chooses to work with: the grey of a furry alien's pelt, the mirrored fl of a "Vlhani," a spider-like colossus with a spherical body and many tentacle-like "whips" as strong as steel cables.
Out of his washed-out color scheme, Castro coaxes a strange and haunting portrait of a cosmos where future humanity struggles for acceptance among a large and widely divergent collection of interstellar species.
The contrast between this species nearly devoid of a concept of the external universe — the Catarkhans — and the Vlhani, who pursue some unimaginable cosmic sublimity with their very racial existence, is jarring and electric, and paints a miniature of Castro's themes and concerns with a startling array of shades of gray.

"Adam-Troy Castro and Jerry Oltion's "The Spaceman from Wyoming" exists in the day after tomorrow's world dominated by equal measure of tabloid-fed superstition and knee-jerk political correctness.
The story covers Alexander Drier's life, a man, who by dint of a rare genetic condition, was born with the popular conception of an alien's face (think of the cover of Whitley Streiber's Communion).
Finally, it is a funny story that is deeply sad.

The early part of the story evokes the potential reality of life on the moon for the early pioneers.
Although neatly structured, intertwining the current and the long past, Adam Troy Castro makes what I count as a Cardinal Sin: referring to another SF story (suspension of disbelief disappearing faster than oxygen out of punctured spacesuit helmet).
It's doubly unfortunate in that the story which is referred to has a not-dissimilar plot, and trebly unfortunate in that it is a Ray Bradbury story which led me to ponder that Bradbury would have written this story somewhat more elegantly and concisely.
