Following a 1989 vote, 53 square miles of the county was transferred to the City and County of Denver for the purpose of constructing Denver International Airport, leaving the western portion of the county as two oddly-shaped peninsulas.
The county is bounded in the north by Weld County and Morgan County, in the east by Washington County, in the south by Arapahoe County and the City and County of Denver, and in the west by the City and County of Broomfield and Jefferson County.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 34.00% from 25 to 44, 19.40% from 45 to 64, and 7.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

With the county seat located continuously at Ephrata, Grant County is located near the center of Washington in the Columbia Basin, and is noted for both its hydroelectric dams and federal irrigation projects.
The office of County Assessor was created by the Territorial Assembly in 1854, and though abolished in some counties in 1925, was restored to all counties by the State Legislature in 1937.
