Anthony Reddy Associates - Irish Independent Article, March 2005
Adamstown in West Dublin is to become the next major residential area near the city.
The concept at Adamstown is to provide a self-contained and sustainable community, with the key difference being a commitment to provide the necessary supporting physical and social infrastructure and services in tandem with the development of quality housing.
Adamstown will be developed based on a timescale and master plan prepared by SDCC and approved by An Bord Pleanala, and will be delivered under the auspices of SDCC in accordance with its designation known as a Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) – a novel fast track means of speeding of new housing developments.

Home - South Dublin County Council
Adamstown could accommodate more than 20,000 people, but the scheme is phased over a long period of time and it will be 15 or more years before such a population is reached.
The residents of Adamstown will not be restricted in owning cars, but the suggested figure of 20,000 would be more than twice the current average level of car ownership in Ireland or Europe and is improbable.
The phasing of Adamstown is not dependent on the future upgrading of the N4 or M50.

Adamstown - Archiseek Architecture Planning Discussion
South Dublin County Council is planning to build some 10,000 new homes catering for a population in excess of 20,000 people on 500 acres of lands at Adamstown in Lucan over the next decade in the country's first major Strategic Development Zone scheme of its type.
Senior executive planner with South Dublin County Council, Paul Hogan, told yesterday's hearing that Adamstown would be built to best practice in planning and design to create sustainable living communities, not just large-scale housing developments.
Adamstown SDZ consists of 11 development areas and four amenity areas with a maximum of 10,150 homes, four schools, two new quality bus corridor routes, park-and-ride facilities, pedestrian and cycling routes, a fire station and its own railway station.

RTE News - Opinions differ on Adamstown plan
Adamstown is unique because it is the Government's first 'Strategic Development Zone', meaning if a developer submits a proposal coming within the terms of the revised plan, a decision will be taken by the Council within two months and it cannot be appealed.
The Board did not accept a submission by Hazel Lawlor, wife of former TD Liam Lawlor, to have their family home in Lucan and lands around it rezoned and included in the development.
At a public hearing earlier this year, the Council claimed that Adamstown was good planning aimed at ending urban sprawl but opponents claimed the plan would lead to the biggest traffic jam in the history of the State.

Following the Rezoning of the Lands at Adamstown by the previous council in 1998, I have endeavoured to ensure that Adamstown would not be developed without provision for a successful integration into an already congested Lucan community and also with adequate infrastructure for those residents who will live in Adamstown in the future.

Obstacles in the planning system and a failure to embrace high density residential development is seriously limiting the number of new homes available in Dublin, with the gap between supply and demand set to widen over the next three years.
There is an urgent need to intensify use of land in key urban areas, which can be best achieved by relaxing restrictions on building height and being more receptive to higher residential densities in well designed buildings”.
