Senior executive planner with South Dublin County Council, Paul Hogan, told yesterday's hearing that Adamstown would be built to best practice in planning and design to create sustainable living communities, not just large-scale housing developments.

Tomorrow evening, South Dublin County Council is due to vote on the proposed development of 10,000 houses at Adamstown, which will double the size of Lucan to that akin of Galway.
In principle, An Taisce is in favour of Adamstown - provided that the council phases development in line with infrastructure, though it is shameful that the 550 acre plan was not first subjected to an Environmental Impact Assessment.
Indeed, it is within this regard, and that of the recent experience of 2001 when many homes in Lucan were flooded, that An Taisce would advocate that a particularly cautionary approach should be adopted on behalf of the local authorities when it comes to the further development of the Lucan area.

The proposed new rail turning facility at Adamstown is welcome, as is the four tracking of the railway line, but to avoid gridlock and ensure that people can get to work on time, we need electrification, connections from Heuston to the city centre and a new rail line linking the suburbs.”
The Green Party is also concerned that the Adamstown project has been given the green light without an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Noting that the rate of legal challenges to decisions on infrastructure projects was much higher than for planning appeals, Mr O'Connor said this raised "considerable" potential for delays in securing final planning clearance for such projects.
