Adaptation. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Where real life ends and adaptation begins is the question, as Orlean herself (Meryl Streep) and the orchid thief, John Laroche (Chris Cooper), are drawn into the story.
As he came under increasing pressure to turn in a screenplay, the "adaptation" became a story of a screenwriter's attempt to write a screenplay about a book that can't be adapted into a screenplay.
As the movie does contain large elements of self-reference, there is also speculation that Donald, the character who writes about split personalities and imaginary characters, might himself be nothing more than another aspect of Charlie's personality (as he is in real life).

Adaptation may be the most self-aware screenplay ever to have been penned by a fat, bald, and repulsive writer.
Whether it is the most ingenious face-saving moves in movie history or simply the product of a facile imagination, Adaptation investigates the so-called creative process while getting in its fair share of jabs directed towards the film industry at large.
As one of the characters says in the film, "Adaptation is a profound process," and indeed it is. The act of changing in order to thrive and prosper in the midst of one's environment is something that is commonplace in all of nature.

Adaptation movie review by Jim Eadon
Adaptation is an increasingly rare breed of movie, a movie for grown-ups (I mutter, piously).
Adaptation was not as moving as it should have been, but I reveled in the themes about mediocrity, passion, capriciousness and self-delusion.
Ironically, this was where the movie unravelled: the acting became stilted, as if the actors themselves were uncertain how to play it, which in turn seems to have been down to fuzzy direction.

Above all ADAPTATION is, at least in theory, the largest cream pie that a filmmaker could throw in the face of an audience and still have that audience come up smiling.

Before Adaptation ends, Charlie will break all the rules he has set out for himself, and the film will knock down most of the walls inherent in cinema.
All this cleverness, however, cannot disguise the fact that the center of the movie—the adaptation, as it were, of Orlean's book—doesn't hold.

 Adaptation. Movie Review
Adaptation is the story of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Nicholas Cage).
It is based on his real experiences as a screenwriter (therefore, the movie makes heavy use of references to Being John Malkovich), and like his breakthrough work, there is heavy use of self-reference, only this time, it is to a much greater degree than merely one actor.
Unfortunately, the two stars I DID give the movie were mostly for that acting, and to a certain degree, the interesting concept of a self-referential screenplay and the moments when that concept were handled well.

So, to reiterate: Adaptation is the story of Charlie Kaufman and his writing of a story that incorporates and is based on a story written by Susan Orlean.
If it is the latter, then Adaptation is a better observer of Hollywood cliches than it is a producer--Charlie's comments on Donald's paint-by-numbers screenplay are funny, but the brothers' involvement in their own corny melodrama is just silly.
This lack of boundaries cranks out a movie that is worth a viewing or two, but I'm not convinced it is entirely deserving of all the critical acclaim it has garnered.

Adaptation plays as a sort of metaphor for writer's block, and while similar subject matter was displayed more brilliantly in the Coen Brothers' vastly underrated Barton Fink, Kaufman and Jonze have fashioned a compelling tale about what it's like to be a writer.
Adaptation is an intimate, in depth look into the world of screenwriting, not only giving a satirical glimpse into the world of big studios, but a look into the mind of the writer himself.
While certainly flawed, Adaptation is more often brilliant than not, and I greatly admire it for it's innovation and willingness to attempt something fresh and exciting.

The ending of "Adaptation." is, as it turns out, a bit of a letdown especially since at one point in the film an authority on screenwriting suggests that an exceptional ending is what separates great films from merely good ones (so you're led to expect an extraordinary finale that never really transpires).
Yet even the more obvious meaning of "Adaptation." cannot ignore that strange — and from a non-grammatical standpoint relatively disappointing — period at the end.
