  Adaptive System
An adaptive system is a physical system that is capable of self-adapting in response to changing environments.
An adaptive system, on the other hand, will be equipped to self-modify into different system-states in order to navigate, function and succeed within different environments.
Adaptive systems are designed to engage and respond to their environments.

The Heart as a Complex Adaptive System   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Systems of this type are governed by universal principles of adaptation and self-organization, in which control and order is emergent rather than predetermined and have come to be known as complex adaptive systems (CAS).
Chaotic systems are very susceptible to changes in initial conditions, i.e., small changes in a parameter of chaotic system can produce very large changes in the output, i.e., poised at the "edge of chaos" [21, 22].
The heart is an organ endowed with an adaptive plasticity (genotypic/phenotypic memory) and capacity to assimilate ("fitness capacity") within the host and in the process modify the environment determining the fate of the body system as whole.

 [No title]
The first challenge is to define what a system is. A system is an assembly of elements hooked together to produce a whole in which the attributes of the elements contribute to a behavior of the whole.
One of the simplest adaptive systems is a flock of birds.
To review, adaptive systems are constituted of agents that are connected to their neighbors and have a degree of freedom in responding to changes, but must respond within simple rules.

Adaptive Optics with Gemini   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Adaptive Optics simply takes a sample of starlight, determines how the atmosphere bent it, and then uses a deformable mirror to "straighten" the starlight out again.
AO systems work best with longer wavelength light, which means that Gemini will see the most dramatic results with infrared observations.
Using this system, it is expected that Gemini will produce the sharpest images yet of the infrared sky and dramatically improve many other types of observations as well.

 ADAPTIVE HYPERMEDIA AND HYPERTEXT
Adaptive hypermedia systems are presently being designed and developed in recognition of the need to provide some system support and control to users.
An adaptive system might provide a different body of information, or a different level of abstraction or treatment based on characteristics such as user's age, language, geographical location or on whether the user is a novice or expert.
The system consists of both a domain model and a user model which is based on an estimation of the user's knowledge level.

Using the paradigm of adaptive hypermedia along with usability design techniques, an we developed an adaptive hypermedia system was developed that automated the customer support tasks of an organization charged with the maintenance and upkeep of a large governmental building.
From a research and implementation perspective, a significant contribution of the system is the implementation of adaptive hypermedia in a commercial environment.
The adaptive hypermedia system, both currently and with further planned enhancements, is proof that technologies and methods that were only research domains a short time ago, can be implemented and profitably employed in support of an organization’s customer support goal.

 What are Complex Adaptive Systems?
A period of flux occurs in all the populations in the system until a new balance is established.
A classic example is that all the water systems in the world, all the streams, rivers, lakes, oceans, waterfalls etc with their infinite beauty, power and variety are governed by the simple principle that water finds its own level.
Most things we take for granted are complex adaptive systems, and the agents in every system exist and behave in total ignorance of the concept but that does not impede their contribution to the system.

As biologists such as Kauffman, who interprets the evolutionary process in terms of self-organizing systems, began to use complexity theory, there was a reaction from the neo-Darwinians such as Dawkins, who extends the theory of evolution to the level of genes.
The genome, Kauffman contends, is a complex adaptive system composed of "networks of genes and their products interacting with one another in enormous webs of regulatory circuitry."(6) Complex systems being adaptive, their evolution tends to be coevolution.
