Adar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adar (אֲדָר, Standard Hebrew Adar, Tiberian Hebrew ʾĂḏār: from Akkadian adaru) is the sixth month of the religious year and the twelfth month of the civil year on the Hebrew calendar.
In leap years, it is preceded by a 30-day intercalary month named Adar Alef, Adar Rishon or Adar I and it is then itself called Adar Bet, Adar Shenei or Adar II.
Occasionally instead of Adar I and Adar II, "Adar" and "Veadar" are used (Ve means 'and' thus: And Adar).

At the simplest level, all lunar calendars are based on the approximation that 2 lunations last 59 days: 30 day full month followed by a 29 day hollow month — but this is only marginally accurate and quickly needs correction by using larger cycles, or the equivalent of leap days.
Adar 1 is only added in leap years.
In ordinary years, Adar 2 is simply called Adar.

"When Adar enters, we increase in joy" (Talmud, Taanit 29a) for this is "the month that was transformed for them from sorrow to joy, from mourning to festivity" (Esther 9:22) by the great miracle and victory of Purim.
Our sages advise that the month of Adar is an auspicious time for the Jewish people, so that if a Jew is faced with a challenging event (i.e., a court case, a medical procedure, etc.) he should endeavor to schedule it on during Adar.

ADARs are not active on adenosine-mononucleotide and are only distantly related by sequence to adenosine and AMP deaminases involved in purine metabolism.
The ADARs recognize a double stranded RNA (dsRNA) structure in the transcript that is formed between the editing site complementary sequence (ECS) - usually located in the downstream 3’ intron of the transcript – and the sequence to be edited.
The ADAR family of proteins consists of ADAR1 and ADAR2 which are expressed in many tissues and ADAR3 which is expressed in the brain.

ADARs are thought to target numerous transcripts in the nervous system (reviewed in Paul and Bass, 1998; Bass, 2002; Morse et al., 2002), so the observed chemotaxis defects probably reflect the combined effects of altering RNA editing on many different mRNAs.
ADARs could do this by creating amino acid changes that alter the affinity of the interacting proteins, as occurs in the G protein-coupled 5-HT serotonin receptor (Niswender et al., 1999).

Furthermore, "The only differences between Adar 1 and Adar 2 are reading the Megillah and Matanos L'evyonim (special holiday gifts given to the poor)," which are both performed in Adar 2 and not in Adar 1.
Tosfos notes that since the Mishnah only singles out these 2 mitzvos of Megillah and Matanos L'evyonim in particular as having relevance exclusively to Adar 2, there are those who have the custom to perform another mitzva of Purim in BOTH Adar 1 and Adar 2, the mitzva of Mishteh V'simcha (feasting and rejoicing).
He says that since every year Adar is followed by the month of Nissan, so too in a leap year, we must maintain that the primary Adar is the one that immediately precedes Nissan, Adar 2.

 Introduction - Torah.org
Normally, when it is not a leap year there is only one month of Adar, which falls between the Jewish month of Shevat and the month of Nissan.
On the fourteenth day of that month, Purim falls for all Jews living in cities that were not walled during the time of Yeshoshua bin Nun.
In a leap year, however, if Purim is observed in Adar Rishon (which gains a day), then the time separation between Purim and Pesach goes from thirty days to sixty days (17 days of Adar 1, 29 days of Adar 2, 14 days of Nissan).

Also, a duplex formed between a 2[prime]-O-methylated oligoribonucleotide and an mRNA molecule was not deaminated by a sample of nuclear extract containing ADARs, whereas a similar duplex that was not 2[prime]-O-methylated was deaminated in high yield (28).

This year, being a leap year in the Hebrew calendar, we have two months of Adar (Adar 1 & Adar 2).
The reason for the additional month is that the Hebrew calendar year, which is based on a lunar cycle, consists of 354 days in contrast to the solar year which has 365 days.
Our sages say, "Mishenichnas Adar, Marbim B'Simcha - "When Adar begins, we increase in joy." Although we must serve G-d "with happiness" throughout the year, yet, we "increase" our Simcha in the month(s) of Adar, the month in which the miracle of Purim took place.
