Learn more about Chord (music) in the online encyclopedia.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The most commonly used chords in western music, triads are the basis of diatonic harmony, and are composed of three notes: a root note, a note which is an interval of a third above the root, and a note which is an interval of a fifth above the root.
Chords are also said to have a function in their diatonic scale, which relates to the expected resolution of each chord within a key.
The dominant seventh chord is useful to composers because of the fact that it is a major chord with a very strong sound, that also includes a tritone between the third and seventh of the chord.

 About Chord Symbols
Chord symbols are constructed from five components: The root, a modifier, extensions, alterations, and a bass note if the chord is inverted.
Note that this is a four-note symmetrical chord.
2 indicates a triad with an added 2; 6 indicates a triad with an added 6.

 Chords
All of the chords in the previous section were in root position, which means that they all have the root of the chord as the lowest note.
The A-natural in measure 2 is on the fifth of the chord.
A slash through a number indicates that you should raise that note one half-step (by adding whatever accidental, sharp, flat, double sharp, double flat, or natural), while an accidental before a number means to add that specific accidental to the pitch.

MUS 312 Form & Analysis, Study Guide L
Though the possibility of a triad's having a note added a 6th above the root was recognized by theorists as early as the 18th century, chords with added notes did not become an accepted part of the harmonic vocabulary until the 20th century.
Added notes are a feature of what is sometimes called "wrong-note style," in which the listener's conventional expectations are almost met, but not quite.
Another possibility for chord construction is the secundal chord, a sonority built from major or minor 2nds, or from a combination of the two.

Added tone chord - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An added tone chord is a triadic chord with an extra "added" note, such as the added sixth.
A suspended chord is a chord in which the third is replaced or accompanied by either a fourth or a major second, although the fourth is far more common.
This type of sound is borrowed from the contrapuntal technique of suspension, where a note from a previous chord is carried over to the next chord, and then resolved down to the third or tonic, suspending a note from the previous chord.

Elfshot Banjo - Chord Theory Part 1
Chords with 3 notes (the most common) are called triads, and chords with 4 notes (such as sixths and sevenths) are called tetrads.
The lowest note (1st) is the root and a C. The middle note (3rd) is an E and the top note (5th) is an G. It's a little harder to count the half-steps in notation unless you can rattle off the chromatic scale without having to think about it.
Although I'm playing 4 notes, this chord is still a triad because 2 of the notes are G. If I was to add another note such as a 7th, the triad would become a tetrad.

An Introduction To Chords   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
A major chord consists of a 'root' (the note on which the chord is based, usually also the lowest note of the chord), the note a 'major third' (four half-steps) higher than the root, and the note a 'minor third' (three half- steps) higher than the second note.
Note that the 6th note of the major scale is the tonic of the relative minor.
Note that the difference between Gmaj7 and G7 is that the "seventh" we add in G7 is a half-step lower than it is in Gmaj7.

The chord built on the seventh degree of the scale is a diminished chord.
Note: Notice that IV in the key of B flat is an E flat major chord, not an E major chord, and vii in the key of G is F sharp diminished, not F diminished.
It is so common that this particular flavor of seventh (a major chord with a minor seventh added) is often called a dominant seventh, regardless of whether the chord is being used as the V (the dominant) of the key.

 Guitar Notes: CHORD FAQ
All you need to do is count up from the root note using notes of the scale, and if you end up on the 5th note of the scale you have a 5th, if you're on the 7th note, you've got a 7th.
The *essential* notes for C9, C11 and C13 are the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th/11th/13th 6.2 - Minor 9ths, 11ths, 13ths ------------------------------------ The same principle applies for the minor versions of these chords.
The difference between this one and a 'normal' diminished is that the 7th of the chord is a flat 7th not a double flat 7th (hence half-diminished).

 Anatomy of a Diminished Chord
Diminished chords are often ignored by folk singers, and it's a shame.
Another way to look at it is that the triad is built of "stacked thirds," where the 2nd note is a b3 above the root, and the 3rd note is a b3 above the 2nd note.
A fourth note may be added by adding another b3 above the 3rd note.

Extended chord - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, extended chords are tertian chords (built from thirds) or triads with notes extended, or added, beyond the fifth, including all the thirds in between the fifth and the furthest extended note.
In practice however, extended chords do not typically use all the chord members; when it is not altered, the fifth is often omitted, as are notes between the seventh and the highest note (i.e., the ninth is often omitted in an eleventh chord; the ninth and eleventh are usually omitted in a thirteenth chord).
Adding the root is also important though the root may be indicated by the chosen notes and musical context or may be passed to a bass instrument.

Notes which appear above the five-line 'staff' upon which music is written are high for that instrument or voice.

Chords played one tone at a time, as if played on a harp, which is Arpa in Italian, thus Arp-eggiated.

 Chord Member Command
If the new note's stem direction and note position is consistent with the note, rest, or chord to the left of the insertion point, then the new note is combined with the item to the left.
If a chord member is added to an existing note, it must have the same duration, or it must be in the opposing stem direction.
Chord members can be removed from a chord in a similar fashion by pressing when the insertion point is directly to the right of the note to be removed.

The numerals given to the notes of a chord derive from the corresponding major scale.
Chords can be varied in many ways: you can add notes to an existing chord (e.g., the sixth), replace chord tones (e.g., use the fourth instead of the third), alter chord tones by flattening or raising them, and many combinations of the ones mentioned above.
In traditional harmony, these chords are thought of as tension chords, meaning they have to be resolved into their corresponding tonic chord (down a fifth).

For example, your basic E chord consists of E, G#, and B. If you add a minor seventh to an E (the minor seventh of E is D), you have an E7 chord.
E7 chords appear most often in the key of A, because the E7 leads strongly back to the tonic A.
Major seventh chords are similar to normal seventh chords except they contain a major seventh (five whole steps and one half step) instead of a minor seventh.

Sus chords: In sus chords the 3rd is replaced with a 4th or a 2nd.
For this reason, the min6 chord is a common substitution for a min7b5 chord.

Essays: Behind the 'Sixth Door' of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle
The downbeat notes G and F from upper- and lower-voice melodies stubbornly crash with the F# pedal in the middle by minor seconds as well.
However, Bartók flavored the note F. As in the Theme (E), the lower-voice melody, as shown in Example 11, starts on the note F. As the melody stubbornly attached the entire (E), the note F is always found on the bass of the downbeat whenever Theme (E) is heard in entirety.
Adding a note that forms a minor second above or below the members of the major and minor triads will result in 12 possibilities.

Notes are entered by positioning the cursor to the desired insertion point, and entering the desired note pitch(es) using your connected MIDI device.
The duration of the note or rest added is determined by the entry item qualities, and should be set before entering a new item.
Chord notes can be added in exactly the same way as with the mouse or computer keyboard; holding the Control key down whilst clicking notes on the on screen piano will keep the cursor in the current time position, ready for adding another note to the current chord.

We use 4 notes in this chord, what means that there are 3 notes left from the C major scale: 2, 4, 6.If one or more of these notes become part of the chord, we call them tensions or chord tensions.
Maybe major chords are not a very good example to explain tensions because the two other tensions that are left, 4 and 6, behave in a special way in combination with major chords.
The 4 of the C major scale is a half note above the 3 (chord tone) of that chord (f is a half note above e) --> the 4 is an avoid note for major chords.

But even though you are probably not going to play 3 note diminished chords for the most part, it is still important to understand the theory behind them.

The difference between this one and a 'normal' diminished is that the 7th of the chord is a flat 7th not a double flat 7th.

As soon as a player makes a chord triad, she must place the cards face-up on the table so that each card is visible.
Each card represents one note within a 4 octave range falling evenly on either side of middle C. The name of each note is written in text form in the middle of each card.
Although these 40 cards represent the same 20 notes, it was important to include them on separate cards in order to remind students that a note's musical symbol is dependent on the context in which it is used.

Which notes are used in a given song is determined by the key of the song, and the choice of a key gives the composer (or bass player) a guide to choosing the chords and notes he wants to use in writing the song (or the bass line).
However, you can form the C major chord, by using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the scale: C, E, and G. (This is why the three notes of the C major chord are called 1st, 3rd, and 5th: they are the 1st, 3rd and 5th note of the C major scale).
In general, in a major key the chords formed using the 1st, 4th, and 5th scale note are major, the ones formed on the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th notes are minor, and the one on the 7th note is diminished.
