Addis Ababa University is a university in Ethiopia.
Although the university has six of its seven campuses within Addis Ababa (the seventh is located in Debre Zeit, about 45 kilometers away), it also maintains branches in many cities throughout Ethiopia.
Addis Ababa University was founded in 1950 at the request of Haile Selassie by a Canadian Jesuit, Dr Lucien Matte as a two-year college, and began operations the next year.

The Senate of the Addis Ababa University issued last week a statement calling for solidarity of the University community in expressing a strong condemnation of acts of terrorism, following a bomb attack that took place at the University’s main campus on April 29 last month.
Speaking at a condolence meeting held at the compus last Friday for Gesimu Shiferaw, a student who passed away as a result of the explosion, Getachew Abera, AAU Senate secretary, said that he believed terrorism, whatever form it assumed, was a cowardly and sinister act.
It is also noteworthy that this institution had never in its history ever known such an act of violence, whether the act was politically motivated or otherwise,” he said.
