In one part of the gaol, the last cell near the wall was used for the condemned, the irony was that on the other side of that wall was were they would be buried.
Outside the hanging tower is a grass strip that is between the outer and inner wall of the Gaol, this is were the bodies were buried, the only markings are the condemned's initials and date of execution on the wall.
Construction of the Gaol began in 1840 and it was in use until 1988.

Adelaide Gaol opened in 1841 and was in constant use for some 147 years until it closed in 1988.
When the gaol opened, it was primarily use to house debtors and felons.
A total of 49 people were executed at the gaol, including Elizabeth Woolcock (1873), the only female to be hanged in South Australia.

The Gaol opened in 1841 with the original building only half completed and had the capacity to hold 140 prisoners, mostly debtors and petty felons as the colony's more hardened criminals were sent to Van Deimans Land or Sydney during the Gaol's construction.
When decommissioned in February 1988 the Gaol's final population of 224 male prisoners were transferred to other penal facilities and the Gaol remains very much the same today as it was when it was closed.
Exhibits include a range of crudely fashioned instruments designed with escape or malice in mind which were confiscated by guards over the years as well as a look into prisoners' day to day lives, of which they spent over two thirds of every day locked in their cells.

In 1843 the gaol had a governor, two turnkeys and two guards but no matron for female prisoners until 1850 when the second stage of the gaol was completed.

Towards the end of 1883 a young lad by the name of Samuel Moyles was sentenced to one month imprisonment and a whipping of fifteen strokes for indecent assault and a John Haggerty was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour and a whipping of twenty strokes for rape.
