The township of Adelaide River lies on the Stuart Highway 201 km northwest of Katherine and 114 km south of Darwin and has a population of 159.
The river was explored by John McDouall Stuart in 1862, became the site of early settlements at Escape Cliffs and Port Daly, and in recent times was the location for the CSIRO's abortive experiment in rice growing at Humpty Doo.
The Adelaide River was first discovered by John Lort Stokes and L.R. Fitzmaurice when the HMS Beagle surveyed the coast of the Northern Territory in 1839.

The river sharks are members of the family Carcharhinidae, and thus share the basic characteristics of the group.
Six species of river sharks are known, although due to their secretive habits, other species could easily be lying undiscovered.
It is also known from the Alligator River system of the Northern Territory, where it occurs with Glyphis species C. Intriguingly, Glyphis specimens from the Adelaide River, Northern Territory, that have provisionally been identified as this species display very different vertebral counts (148 total vertebrae, versus 217 in specimens from the Bizant River).

By April 1888, the railway had reached Adelaide River and a train first crossed the river using a temporary crossing as construction of the bridge was not complete at that time.
