A notable venue in the 1950s was a road circuit at Albert Park in Melbourne, for many years.
Australia became part of the F1 world championship in 1985 with the last race of the season held on the street circuit in Adelaide.
The circuit, whilst not as ridiculously tight as Monaco, was notoriously tough on drivers and gearboxes.

This will not be the first time Shane has competed at the 3.2km Adelaide circuit, having competed there in 2000 in a Saloon Car, in which he finished 3rd overall.
Shane notes that Adelaide is a place of high curbs and many bumps, however it is a track which he rates very highly.
Adelaide is a street circuit in design, however the layout of the track and its surroundings makes it very similar to a traditional race circuit, due to the wide run-off areas and width of the track.

Adelaide was chosen as the venue and a street circuit was set up on the public roads in and around the Victoria horse racing track.
Adelaide proved rather unique as a street circuit, in that is was rather quick, with long straights interspersed with slow right-angled turns and fast kinks.
The last race to be staged on the circuit was 1995 when Damon Hill came home two laps ahead of the rest of the field, including team-mate Coulthard who managed to plough his Williams into the pit-wall.

What makes this circuit so difficult is that the most technical section consists of many tight and fast-approaching twists and turns combined with the continual ascents and descents in the highly-scenic mountains, so that when drivers finally exit the mountainous section, their nerves are extremely frayed.
This circuit is also somewhat rough on brakes in long races, in part due to the traffic jams (especially at the first corner at the beginning of a race).
