Cilicia was on the north east coast of the Mediterranean Sea and Adelard took the natural coastal route round the east end of the Mediterranean to Syria and then later to Palestine.

Adelard also wrote arithmetic books, the earliest one of which was written before he studied Arabic arithmetic.

Adelard's chief contribution to the development of medieval thought lay not so much in his works on natural philosophy as in the various translations he made from the Arabic.
Adelard's most significant astronomical achievement was his translation (c.1126, possibly in collaboration with Petrus Alphonsus) of the 'Astronomical Tables' of al-Khwarizmi in 37 introductory chapters and 116 astronomical tables.
It is very probable that during the 1130s Adelard was the first to present a full version of almost the entirety of Euclid's* 'Elements' from the Arabic text (probably that of al- Hajjaj), which for centuries would be the chief geometry textbook in the West.
