This theatre was demolished in 1858 to make way for a new theatre which opened later that same year and was also called The Theatre Royal, Adelphi.
At the turn of the century the theatre was virtually reconstructed and reopened in 1901 as The Century Theatre, but it reverted to its previous name the following year.
The theatre was then once again completely reconstructed in 1930 re-designing in the art-deco style of the period of Ernest Schaufelberg changing back to its original name of The Adelphi Theatre.

An excellent description of Castle Square Theatre is found in a souvenir playbill which describes and praises the Rococo/Renaissance style interior and also mentions the playhouse's new system of dimming the stage lights more gradually through the use of a switchboard.
Apart from the Tremont Theatre, it was the first playhouse to be erected in the Boston theater district that originated around the turn of the century around the Southern end of Tremont Street.

My sister and I went to see Chicago on Monday 22nd September 2003 at the Adelphi Theatre in London after being told by many that it was a "must see show".
Well, what a disappointment, we both like the theatre but we feel cheated at the expense of the tickets and the complete lack of any imagination from the props and costume departments.
The front row seats give you easy access to the bar at the front of the theatre on the left, which was little used at the interval, and much more civilised than getting crushed in the main bars.
