Little Aden was well known to seafarers for its tanker port with a very welcome seaman's mission near to the BP Aden tugs' jetties, complete with swimming pool and air conditioned bar.
Aden became the capital of the new People's Republic of South Yemen which was renamed the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in 1970.
Aden was briefly the center of the secessionist Democratic Republic of Yemen from 21 May 1994 but was reoccupied by Republic of Yemen troops on 7 July 1994.

In 1922, the government of Yemen reintroduced an ancient Islamic law requiring that Jewish orphans under age 12 be forcibly converted to Islam.
Aden's Jewish community was economically paralyzed, as most of the Jewish stores and businesses were destroyed.
This increasingly perilous situation led to the emigration of virtually the entire Yemenite Jewish community - almost 50,000 - between June 1949 and September 1950 in Operation "Magic Carpet." A smaller, continuous migration was allowed to continue into 1962, when a civil war put an abrupt halt to any further Jewish exodus.

Christ Church in Aden was built in the 1860's and in fact Queen Victoria was one of the first benefactors.
Between 1987 and 1995 the then Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf, John Brown, was in negotiations with the government of southern Yemen and afterwards with the new united government of the Yemen Arab Republic to restore the church.
The matter was clinched when Bishop John received a fatwa from Sheikh Zabarah, the Grand Mufti of the Yemen, instructing that the church should be restored to him and that Christians should be permitted to worship freely, just as "Muslims are permitted to do in Britain".
