SDSU Faculty Profile - Dr. Victor Miguel Ponce - Abstracts of recent publications
Thick stands of red shank (Adenostoma sparsifolium) constitute the predominant species in several of the lineaments identified in aerial images.
Unlike the chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum), its closely related and more widely distributed chaparral species, the red shank is a tall arborescent shrub which thrives on moist sites.
The spatial distribution of blue elderberry and red shank points to the existence of local moisture gradients which could be tied to the rock fractures.

SYNTAXONOMICAL SYNOPSIS OF THE NORTH AMERICA I
They are also included in this order the seral bushlands communities dominated by Adenostoma fasciculatum, named “chaparrales de chamizo”, which develop from degradation due to repited fires in both climatophilous “encinares” and chaparral (Adenostomion fasciculati), as well the lower semiarid climax infra and thermomediterranean South Californian chaparral, rich in succulent and caulirrosuletous plants (Agavion shawii).
Physiognomy and habitat: four leaves pine pinyon and dwarf encino chaparral woodland with Adenostoma sparsifolium, 4-6 m high, 40 cm trunk diameter, sand mull cambisol on sand stone bedrock.
Peroceanic and euoceanic, mesomediterranean dry-subhumid Californian association typical of the South Californian Ranges sector that represents the Adenostoma fasciculatum chaparral proceeding from the degradation, caused by repeated fires, of the Dryopterido-Quercetum agrifoliae and Rhoo anisophyllae-Quercetum dumosae associations.

The species is commonly associated with heavy brush containing large rocks or boulders, in areas of coastal sage scrub, chaparral, thornscrub, and desert scrub.
However, chamise and redshank (Adenostoma sparsifolium) vegetation associations may offer better structural conditions, serving as refuges and for food resources, than other habitats.

Leaf gas exchange was examined using a Li-Cor 6400 portable gas exchange system and the leaf light utilization was examined using a PP system spectrometer.
Three plants of each two dominated resprouted species (Adenostoma fasciculatum and Adenostoma sparsifolium) were examined for foliar reflectance in parallel to leaf gas exchange (CO and water vapor fluxes), leaf area, leaf water content, stem water potential and pigment concentrations.
The reflectance indices such as NDVI (normalized differential vegetation index), PRI (photochemical reflectance index) and WBI (water band index) were calculated from the reflectance data.
