Adephaga is the second largest suborder of Coleoptera.
Evidence for the sister relationship of Adephaga to Myxophaga+Polyphaga includes complete sclerotization of elytra, reduced number of hind wing crossveins, and folded (rather than rolled) hind wings in the three suborders (Maddison, 2002).
This new phylogeny placed Polyphaga sister to Adephaga with Myxophaga sister to the Polyphaga+Adephaga clade and Archostemata sister to the rest of the suborders (Figure 5).

Chemical Secretions of the Suborder Adephaga (Coleoptera)
Introduction The suborder Adephaga represents a taxonomically well-defined group of beetles which exhibit a wide variety of chemical secretions and associated behaviors and ecological interactions.
Gland constituents The variety of chemicals produced in the pygidial and prothoracic glands of Adephaga is extremely extensive.
Since all members of Adephaga possess pygidial glands and Adephaga is a relatively ancient lineage, perhaps the presence of chemical defenses has played some part in the success of the group as a whole.

 COLEOPTERA
Carabidae contains the majority of terrestrial Adephaga and most are easily identified using characters such as the filiform antennae with antennomeres beyond 3 or 4 densely pubescent, a grooming organ or antenna cleaner on the protibia, presence of erect, fixed tactile setae on the body.
The genus Omophron (2nd figure) has an atypical shape for the group and looks like some of the aquatic Adephaga.
Another group of unusual carabids is the subfamily Pseudomorphinae (fourth figure) which are broad and flattened.

Bombardier Beetles and the Argument of Design
Bombardier beetles belong to a suborder of beetles known as Adephaga.
One group of bombardier beetles (the paussines) uses the same chemical mechanism to shoot their defensive spray as other bombardier beetles, but they have a totally different method of aiming.
[Eisner and Aneshansley, 1982] Pygidial glands are used for defense not just by bombardier beetles but by virtually all beetles in the suborder Adephaga, but the structure of the glands and the chemicals they secrete vary significantly among different families and genera of beetles.

Larvae of this large and common family (suborder Adephaga) live in a wide range of terrestrial and semi-aquatic habitats, including many (especially from the families Scaritinae, Trechinae and Bembidiinae) that specialise in damp habitats and are found on swamps or at the edges of streams and ponds.
Most species are likely to be predacious as larvae, feeding on soft bodied insects, snails and worms.

In the Adephaga, the first abdominal sternite is divided by the hind coxae, the hind trochanters are large and offset toward the midline, and the hind femora nearly touch the coxae.
(Most have 5-5-5 tarsal formula and filiform antennae.) Major families in the Adephaga are Cicindelidae (the tiger beetles) and Carabidae (the ground beetles); other major families are in the Polyphaga.
Most are dark, shiny, elongate, and somewhat flattened, and with grooved elytra.
