  430. Adipic acid (WHO Food Additives Series 12)
Approximately 50% of the adipic acid was recovered unchanged, from the urine (Flaschentrager, 1926).
Rats which had been maintained for 20-25 weeks on diets containing high levels of adipic acid (400 or 800 mg/day), and rats which had not previously received dietary adipic acid, were administered orally a total dose of 5.6 or 11.2 g of adipic acid, over a period of 14 days.
Dominant lethal studies Adipic acid was administered orally to groups each of 10 male rats at dose levels of 3.75, 37.5, 375 mg/kg body weight (one dose per the acute study) and in the subacute study 3.75, 37.5, 375 mg/kg body weight (one dose/day for five days).

Recovery of vanadium and copper catalysts from adipic acid production   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Adipic acid (ADA) is one of the top 50 organic chemicals in the world and is primarily consumed for the production of Nylon 6,6, polyamide fibers and resins.
Traditionally, ADA is made by hydrogenation of phenol to cyclophexanol or by oxidation of cyclohexane to a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclophexanol (also known as KA oil) in the presence of a cobalt or a boric acid catalyst.
The cyclophexanol or KA oil is further oxidized to adipic acid with nitric acid in the presence of copper and vanadium salts as catalysts.

 dicarboxylic acids
Sebacic acid and its derivatives, as azelaic acid, have a variety of industrial uses as plasticizers, lubricants, diffusion pump oils, cosmetics, candles, etc. It is also used in the synthesis of polyamide, as nylon, and of alkyd resins.
It must be recalled that the determination of the dicarboxylic acids generated by permanganate-periodate oxidation of monoenoic fatty acids was useful to study the position of the double bond in the carbon chain (Longmuir KJ et al., Anal Biochem 1987, 167, 213).
Fatty acid hydroperoxides generated by plant lipoxygenases from linoleic and linolenic acids are known to serve as substrates for a divinyl ether synthase which produces divinyl ether fatty acids.

Adipic acid is also used as a food ingredient in gelatins, desserts and other foods that require acidulation.
Adipic acid can be produced from butadiene by carboalkoxylation, but this process is not commercialized.
The production of adipic acid through the oxidation of cyclohexane is done by reacting cyclohexane with oxygen for air in the presents of a catalyze of cobalt or manganese at a temperature of 150C to 160C. This reaction forms a mixture of the cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone.

DSM - DSM Exclusive Synthesis / Intermediates - Adipic acid dihydrazide
Adipic acid dihydrazide (CAS 1071-93-8, ADH) is used as chain extender in the preparation of waterborne polyurethane binders and secondly as crosslinker in waterbased coatings.
In addition to adipic acid dihydrazide the lower molecular weight analogue succinic acid dihydrazide (SDH) is developed.
Succinic acid dihydrazide can be used in the same applications as adipic acid dihydrazide but shows a higher water-solubility than ADH.

Adipic acid is sold commercially as an additive in nylon 6,6, lubricants, polyurethane foams, synthetic lub oils, polyolefins, urethanes, and as an acidulant in foods.
Because nitric acid is used in the synthesis of adipic acid, it must be monitored for contaminant levels of nitrogen.
For most applications adipic acid must be 99.99% pure.

Acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An acid (often represented by the generic formula HA) is traditionally considered any chemical compound that when dissolved in water, gives a solution with a pH of less than 7.0.
The strength of an acid may be understood by this definition by the stability of hydronium and the solvated conjugate base upon dissociation.
Nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and perchloric acid are all strong acids, whereas nitrous acid, sulfurous acid and hypochlorous acid are all weak.

Direct Conversion of Cyclohexane into Adipic Acid with Molecular Oxygen Catalyzed by N-Hydroxyphthalimide Combined with ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Direct conversion of cyclohexane into adipic acid was achieved by the use of the radical catalyst, N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI), in the presence of a small amount of a transition metal.
Thus, the oxidation of cyclohexane to adipic acid was found to be enhanced by the addition of a small amount of Co(OAc)
The present oxidation seems to be the first practical environmentally friendly process, in which nitric acid is not used as the oxidant, for the production of adipic acid from cyclohexane.

Deliquescence of malonic, succinic, glutaric, and adipic acid particles
Using an optical microscope coupled to a flow cell, we investigated the deliquescence of malonic, succinic, glutaric, and adipic acid particles with sizes ranging from 2 to 40 μm.
Deliquescence relative humidities were determined for temperatures ranging from 293 to 243 K. Over this temperature range both succinic acid and adipic acid deliquesced at approximately 100% relative humidity, whereas malonic acid and glutaric acid deliquesced at significantly lower relative humidities.
