Forty-six of the tallest mountains are considered "the 46" peaks over 4000 ft, thanks to a survey done around the start of the 20th century.
The latter is a majestic cliff rising vertically from the pass to a height of 1300 ft. Keene Valley, in the centre of Essex county, is another picturesque region, presenting a pleasing combination of peaceful valley and rugged hills.

It is a beautiful area, dotted with lakes and mountains.
The thing with the adirondaks is that it is some sort of state managed private land hybrid thingy(to be technical).
Some lung busting climbs, and when I was done ridin' I took one last run down the Mt all the way to the KOA where I was staying, jumped off a little cliff into the river and took a swim.

So, one of my goals for this Adirondak trip was to do Mt. Marcy and share in that experience.
A little ways further is the turn that takes you to the Adirondak Loj, which is also a very popular point to access many of the peaks (including Mt. Marcy) in the "High Peaks" area of the Adirondak wilderness.
I found a campsite in the campground just a mile or so away from the main parking lot and spent the afternoon and evening preparing for a short backpacking trip to start the next day.

I went Hiking in the Adirondak Mountain Preserve...It was sweet, the hike was fun and challenging.
I climbed a mountain last year with the boys at camp, and the feeling you get when you reach the summit is amazing because you feel like you conquered the world.
The physical and emotional strain it takes to climb a mountain is tremendous, but once you get up there it definitely is rewarding.

The engine blew when I was camping in the Adirondak mountains and I had to get my brother to tow me and my girl (now wife) home to Montreal with his '62 1200.
We did it during the night so as not to hold up too much traffic as 40hp to propel two cars through the mountains isn't excessive.
Eventually the tow rope which was tied to his rear axle tore up his hydraulic brake line and he had no brakes so I had to do the braking for both cars.

I live on Long Island just east of NYC and drive on the island, in the city and occasionally upstate New York which is somewhat mountainous.
I've driven it in the mountains over several passes and through the twisties.

Back in the day before Liesl and kids, I used to hang out in the Adirondak Mountains of Upstate New York spending my summers at an all boys wilderness camp - Deerfoot Lodge.
This was Liesl's first visit to the Adirondaks and so when we arrived at the top I was gung ho to hike back down the far side and back to ADK through Avalanch Pass so Liesl could get the feel of the place from the inside.
The trails in the Adirondaks in general but the High Peaks wilderness especailly are 'direct' there are no switchbacks and not much open ground.
