MUMBAI: The Aditya Birla group is close to acquiring a Mumbai-based BPO (business process outsourcing) firm, Transworks, for close to $5m (Rs 25 crore) in an attempt to secure a foothold in the fast-growing BPO segment, according to a leading Indian business daily.
The AV Birla group appears to have pipped New Jersey-based IT services major, Cognizant Technologies, whose talks to acquire a strategic stake in the BPO firm were said to be at an advanced stage.
It is not known whether the Birla group is routing the transaction through one of its group companies.

MUMBAI: Cement despatches of the Aditya Birla Group during February fell by 0.93 per cent to 21.84 lakh tonnes over the same month last fiscal while production was marginally up by 0.79 per cent at 22.25 lakh tonnes.
Aditya Birla Group's cement despatches during the April-February 05 rose 4.94 per cent at 236.79 lakh tonnes over the last fiscal figures while production grew by 5.15 per cent to 237.41 lakh tonnes.
The clinker despatches for the group during the April-February period were down 2.72 per cent at 28.09 lakh tonnes over the corresponding previous year period.
