Adjournment debate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Westminster System, an adjournment debate is a debate on the motion, "That this House do now adjourn." In practice, this is a way of enabling the House to have a debate on a subject without considering a substantive motion.
The half-hour adjournment is an opportunity for a backbench Member of Parliament to raise a subject of his or her choosing, of which advance notice has been given, with the appropriate Government Minister.
It is not usual for the House to vote on the adjournment Motion; it is either agreed to without a vote, or it lapses once the allotted time has expired.

Adjournment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chess, adjournment of a game involves suspending it and postponing it until later, typically the following day.
The last rule, while seemingly bizarre, is the only way to adjourn a game fairly: the alternative of suspending a game in a position known to both players gives a big advantage to the player who has the move upon resumption, since they get to choose the best continuation after a thorough analysis.
As such, the rule ensures that neither player knows upon adjournment what the position will be when it is next their turn to move.

ORHT - Guideline 1 - Adjourning and Rescheduling Hearings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A party may request an adjournment because they wish to be represented at the hearing, and either they have had insufficient time to find a lawyer or agent, or their representative is unavailable on the date set for the hearing or cannot adequately prepare the case in the time available.
For example, the adjournment may be given on the basis that the party requesting it will deliver to the other party(ies) some further information about their position or a copy of evidence that the party will present when the hearing resumes.
This may, therefore, have caused the party opposing the adjournment to incur further costs of representation, and if so, that party can ask that the requesting party should be ordered to pay his or her “costs” of being represented on the day the adjournment was granted (see subsection 190(2) of the Act and Guideline 3).

The adjournment policy in Rochester enables the Court to better serve the needs of all participants in the judicial process and is compatible with the Court's mission of developing a cost-effective and efficient legal environment.
The underlying principal of the adjournment policy is that the Court will grant the parties one adjournment as a matter of course in all but the most extraordinary circumstances.
The Court encourages parties to set a realistic adjournment time period to afford themselves the opportunity to properly address the issues involved and genuinely be prepared to present them to the Court on the adjourned date if the matter is not otherwise resolved.

Information Sheet No.13 - The Adjournment Debate - Legislative Council - Parliament of Victoria
The Adjournment debate is only partly true to its name as, although it occurs after a motion is moved for the adjournment of the Council, it is not technically a debate but an opportunity for Members to raise issues of concern with Ministers in order to elicit government action in response.
In this sense, the Adjournment debate differs from Question Time in which Ministers are asked questions without notice to extract information, scrutinise Ministers’ management of their portfolios and, at times, to embarrass the government.
The Adjournment debate is intended to have a more limited purpose by acting as a means by which Members can provide Ministers with information on matters of recent occurrence, often in relation to problems existing within the Members’ electorates.
