	ACT News Update: Uganda
		Geneva, March 10, 2005—Suspected Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels attacked Adjumani District in northern Uganda last night, according to the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), a member of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International that is assisting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Sudanese refugees in the area.
		The head of the LWF program in Uganda, Craig Kippels, says initial reports are that six people were killed, 16 injured and an unknown number abducted.
		LWF is assisting many of the estimated 20,000 IDPs in Adjumani District by providing access to clean water, access to farming tools and animals, food and food-preparation items, household supplies, educational supplies, and access to safe areas for sleeping.

		On 8 July 2002, LRA rebels attacked Maaji refugee settlement in Adjumani district, resulting in the killing of a soldier and refugees and the burning of houses.
		The RNIS has not received any recent nutritional information on refugees but their condition is not deemed to be critical as a result of the improved physical security situation in many areas and the generally good food security seen in the country.

		More than 55 prisoners have escaped from a jail in the north-west of Uganda in Adjumani during a storm on Sunday, prison officials have confirmed.
		Senior assistant commissioner for Uganda's prisons, Mary Kaddu, says one reason for the recent escapes may be that many accused of capital offences have been waiting for a long time to go on trial.
		"For the last three years the High Court has not sat [in Adjumani] and there is a shortage of judges," she told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

		Representatives of UNHCR, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Ugandan government were travelling to the affected area over the weekend to assess the situation in the important refugee-hosting Adjumani district, located at the Sudanese border.
		Over the last three months, the UN agency has recorded 25 rebel attacks in Adjumani and Moyo districts, in which groups of seven to 25 people entered villages and refugee settlements mainly to steal food and medicine.
		Many of the refugees are said to be going northwards to other refugee settlements closer to the Sudanese border and into neighbouring Moyo district in the east.

		OVER 60 restaurants, malwa (local brew) drinking places and shops in Adjumani town council have been closed due to lack of toilets.
		The town clerk, Samuel Lagu, said the measure was taken to stop the spread of cholera that killed at least three people in two sub-counties neighbouring the town council last week.

		It’s dusk at the Robidire refugee settlement outside the northern Ugandan town of Adjumani, and Michael Ochiti’s three little children have just finished their only meal of the day.

		The families were waiting for transport to a reception center where they would be registered and sorted to refugee settlements in the Moyo and Adjumani districts.
		Many of the people living in Moyo and Adjumani, main cities in Northern Uganda, are refugees from the war in southern Sudan.
