An adjutant general is the chief administrative officer to a military general.
In the United States, an adjutant general may administer any major military unit, including a division, state guard unit, militia, corps, etc. Adjutant generals are often tasked with maintaining personnel records and as such sometimes have oversight over veterans' institutions.
An adjutant general is the senior military officer and de facto commander of the National Guard of each state.
