Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The House of Commons checks the powers of the Prime Minister through committee hearings and through Question Time, a weekly occurrence in which the Prime Minister is obliged to respond to the questions of the Leader of the Opposition and other members of the House.
When the House of Lords does oppose the Prime Minister, it is generally ineffectual in defeating entire Bills (though almost all Bills are successfully modified by the Upper House during their passage through Parliament).

London, the capital of England and chief city of the British Empire, is situated about fifty miles from the mouth of the Thames, Lat.
London at this time consisted of a collection of low wooden houses thatched with reeds or straw, thus affording combustible material for the numerous and destructive fires which frequently broke out, as in 1087 when the greater part of the city, including St. Paul's, was burnt.
London under the Hanoverian kings lost the beauty it formerly had and became a vast collection of houses, plain but comfortable, a condition from which it is only now successfully emerging.

An engraving of Admiralty House, London, from a sketch
Before he left London Bligh had been warned that his strongest adversary in the colony would almost certainly be John Macarthur, now a civilian and well-established with his flocks of sheep on his 5,000 acres grant at Camden, and everything that King told Bligh bore this out.
Sir Joseph Banks produced admiralty documents which he felt were enough "to prove that the admiralty admits that the censor of the court marshal had no foundation in evidence", and declared that at the colonial office all concerns continued to praise Bligh's talents, perseverance and spirited conduct.
