 HistoryLink Essay:Admiralty Head Lighthouse
Admiralty Head is a 90-foot high promontory that projects into Admiralty Inlet on the west coast of Whidbey Island in Island County four miles south of Coupeville.
Marine surveys of Washington’s inland waterways, commissioned by the Lighthouse Board in the 1850s, recommended that the entrance to Admiralty Inlet be marked with two lights: on Whidbey Island to the east, and on Point Wilson (on Quimper Peninsula near Port Townsend) to the west.
Eventually the Admiralty Head Lighthouse, under the care of park rangers, was opened to the public as Fort Casey’s interpretive center and historical museum.

A relatively shallow sill at Admiralty Inlet separates the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the waters of Puget Sound proper.
In particular, sills at the Tacoma Narrows and Admiralty Inlet greatly influence water movement through the basin.
Mixing at the Admiralty Inlet sill draws seaward-moving surface water down into the inward-moving salty water from the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

 Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee
The presence of a shallow sill at the entrance to Admiralty Inlet, the narrow opening of the inlet, and the large volume of water passing through the inlet, magnifies the extent of this mixing.
Strickland (1983) describes the sill at Admiralty Inlet as obstructing the continuous inflow of deep water thereby producing one of the dominant areas of mixing in the entire Puget Sound.
In contrast to the mixing dynamics of Admiralty Inlet, water entering Discovery Bay is persistently stratified with colder, saltier, and denser water near the bottom and lower salinity and warmer waters at the surface.
