Adobe Type Manager - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is the name of four different computer programs created and marketed by Adobe Systems.
The original ATM was created around 1991 for the Apple Macintosh computer platform to scale PostScript Type 1 fonts for the computer monitor, and for printing to non PostScript printers.
ATM Deluxe performed the same font-smoothing function as ATM Lite, but performed a variety of other functions: activation and deactivation of fonts; creating sets of fonts that could be activated or deactivated simultaneously; viewing and printing font samples; and scanning for duplicate fonts, font format conflicts, and PostScript fonts missing screen or printer files.

Macworld: Review: Adobe Type Manager 4.5
Less useful is ATM 4.5's ability to create temporary font sets; it seems just as easy to create a set and then deactivate or delete it if you don't need it any longer.
In addition, Adobe Type Reunion won't work with QuarkXPress 4.0X's palettes, although it works fine with the Font menu; the company says a fix is in the works.
Adobe Type Manager 4.5 is a must-have upgrade for current ATM users; publishing-oriented users simply depend on fonts too much not to take advantage of the program's improved stability and management abilities.

 Adobe - Type Manager Light
Adobe® Type Manager® (ATM) Light is a system software component that automatically generates high-quality screen font bitmaps from the PostScript®; outlines in Type 1 or OpenType® format.
With ATM, you can scale your fonts without the characters appearing jagged, and you can also enable "font smoothing," which further improves the appearance of your fonts onscreen by using your computer monitor's color palette to intelligently improve the rendering of characters.
ATM Light also allows you to print PostScript fonts on non PostScript printers, and can be used to create custom instances of multiple master fonts.

However, for those who use Type 1 fonts - and the professional design industry is still built on them - ATM remains an essential part of their set-up.
ATM is able to create such fonts through its use of multiple master outlines which allow the width and weight of a font to be varied as required.
ATM Deluxe's final trick is its new ability to anti-alias font rendering on screen.

 The Problem with Standards
And when I reported the problem to Adobe, the engineer in charge just shrugged and said that I was the first person to report the problem in the two or three years since they'd rewritten the TIFF generation code, so it must not be very important to fix.
ATM was fairly picky about the fonts it would rasterize, so fonts that didn't meet the standards wouldn't look good on users' screens.
In the case of Type 1 fonts, ATM served this purpose.
