ADOLF, an epic manga series opposing war, anti-Semitism, racism, and imperialism, is widely regarded as one of Osamu Tezuka's finest works.
ADOLF was one of the first manga books to be published in a deluxe hardcover format and to be sold not in the manga corners of stores but in the literature section.
ADOLF: A TALE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and ADOLF: AN EXILE IN JAPAN are the first two volumes in Tezuka's epic saga.

Mangamaniacs Review: Adolf by Osamu Tezuka   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
With Adolf, the strongly humanist Tezuka set out to tell a story that shows the cruelty and horror that humanity is capable of, as well as the strength and beauty, and he succeeds admirably on all fronts.
Adolf was a fresh perspective on that era of history, with a lot of wisdom to impart to even the most jaded of readers.
What Adolf is, though, is one of a mere handful of works I feel genuinely deserve the label "masterpiece." I recommend this work in the strongest possible terms to all human beings.

 SAVANT:: Essay
For instance, in Adolf (by the late Osamu Tezuka, whose funeral in Japan was nearly as large as that of the Emperor Hirohito himself), characters are rendered in an almost symbolic manner-they are so stylized that they nearly cease to be characters, instead becoming icons, metaphors in their own rites.
Adolf is a book that graphically deals in extremes-the characters may as well be constructed from clay, for all the contortions they endure during moments of emotional duress.
Generally, manga are narrative marvels of speed and action, the story progressing quickly through a collection of-nearly calligraphic in their simplicity-panels, combat and struggle portrayed in a usually silent, graceful manner.

Non-jewish Adolf doesn't want to go to school in Germany and take the career path that his father wants for him, because he doesn't want to be taught that jews and therefore jewish-Adolf are bad.
Osamu Tezuka's, 'Adolf: A Tale of the Twentieth Century,' is the opening chapter in what will turn out to be an epic, sweeping tale of 3 Adolf's - Adolf Hitler, Adolf Kamil (a jewish boy growing up in Japan) and Adolf Kaufman (a half japanese, half german youth).

Osamu Tezuka's Adolf is not surprising because of the depth of its emotions, then, but because of its brutal honesty in its depiction of the Axis's position being wrong.
Adolf tells the saga of three men named Adolf: the Fuhrer (Adolf Hitler), a German Jew (Adolf Kamil), and a German/Japanese (Adolf Kaufmann), and how their lives became bound together through a twist of fate.
Adolf is an incredibly grim and powerful story; it's worth giving a warning that those who buy the first volume (A Tale of the Twentieth Century) will soon be scrambling for the rest of the books.

The bestseller is Shukan Shonen Jump, a weekly comic for boys (but read by all ages and sexes), that regularly shifts five million copies, but there are hundreds of other titles, not to mention the popular daily strips in newspapers such as Chibi Maruko-chan, about the daily life of schoolgirl Maruko and her family.
Although there are plenty of manga that cater to less wholesome tastes, with sexual violence against women being top of the perversions list, comic books are frequently used to explain complicated current affairs topics, such as trade friction problems between the US and Japan, and to teach high-school subjects.
Manga are targeted at all age groups and it's common to see a cross-section of society reading them.

In his defense, it was Tezuka himself that conceived and perfected this delivery intrinsic to manga that moves "at the speed of life" as, presumably, the most effective method of involving the reader in the story.
ADOLF, despite this contextual hurdle, is undeniably brilliant, as Tezuka examines the social and cultural factors that saw Japan ally itself with Nazi Germany in a bid to definitively rule Asia once and for all.
Despite its appeal on a number of levels, ADOLF was (and remains) a difficult sell due to the lack of similar manga both visually and narratively.

Manga, which includes everything from teen romance to sports to ghost and horror stories and more, offers more choices for readers than the superhero fantasy adventures that still dominate mainstream American comic books.
Manga graphic novels are produced in a smaller size, and often are thicker than other kinds of graphic novels.
In fact, one of the things that makes manga so worthy of comment, acceptance, and focus in our comic book community is that not only is manga bringing in youth of both genders into comics, it is popular with everyone — men, women, girls, and boys.

And one minor difference between Japanese manga and general superhero comics like D.C. Comics or Marvel Comics (aside from the fl and white nature of manga), is that manga are usually the vision of a single writer (at most 2, generally).

Inescapable, unavoidable, and impossible to ignore, the manga explosion is either going to go away-which is bad, as so many mass-market bookstores seem to be bulking up their comics supply based on manga's lead-or manga will continue to grow-also bad, as the direct market scrambles to keep up.
I think what's daunting about manga for most readers who are more comfortable with English language comic books (I don't want to go so far as to say "superhero fans," but you and I both know that's what I'm talking about) is that there's suddenly so much of it available.
Manga has such diverse readership-- it's targeting the emotional and visceral subtexts of people outside of the 14-24 male demographic.

Tezuka pioneered short story and long-form manga and constantly refined their expansive, visually oriented storytelling.
To the Japanese, Tezuka is a cultural icon, one of their nation's most significant 20th century figures, celebrated in his own one-man museum and almost worshipped as the 'God of Manga'.
Tezuka shows their lives trampled over by the egoism of the state, first by Nazism's racial hatred, which brainwashes one young man into executing his Jewish friend's father, and ultimately in a showdown on opposing sides of the Israeli-Palestinian War.

ADOLF is a complex historical fiction in five volumes.
While Hitler's presence is the driving force of the book, the story is really about two childhood friends: Adolf Kamil is a German Jew living in exile with his family in Japan; his best friend is Adolf Kaufmann, a half-German, half-Japanese boy who grow up together in the port city of Kobe.
The entirety of ADOLF spans decades and we watch the boys grow up and become twisted by the secret hunted by the Reich; twisted by the War; and grow twisted ultimately by themselves.
