In this he expressed the idea that the progress of culture is associated with the elimination of ornament from useful objects, and that it was a crime to have craftsmen waste their time on ornamentation that served to hasten the time when an object was obsolete.
In the same essay Loos asserted that "All art is erotic," and that a European man who tattoos himself is either a criminal or a degenerate; if a tattooed man dies out of prison, Loos reasoned, it's only because he didn't live long enough to commit his inevitable murder.

 Adolf Loos Summary
Adolf Loos was born in Brünn (Brno), now in the Czech Republic but then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on December 10, 1870, the son of a stone mason and sculptor.
Loos was deaf until the age of 12 and was hearing-impaired until the end of his life; this physical disability influenced his character, and he remained a loner as an individual and as an artist.
Loos was also interested in the decorative arts, collecting sterling silver and high quality leather goods, which he noted for their plain yet luxurious appeal.

Adolf Loos is one of the few men influential and colorfully original enough to successfully reject the artistic and architectural trends in turn-of-the-century Vienna.
When Loos lauds the functional, he is not clamoring for the removal of architecture to the realm of the bland or ugly, nor does he wish it to be a large "functional" space whose enclosed volume is plain and thereby functional.
Loos wishes to revert to a style of architecture structured on the tradition of previous eras, a time where truth in architecture reigned supreme and additions were not merely altering but improving established design.

 Adolf Loos (1870 - 1933)
Adolf Loos (December 10, 1870 in Brno, Moravia—August 8, 1933 in Vienna, Austria) was an early-20th century Viennese modernist architect who is associated with the International Style.
Loos introduced a sense of the "immorality" of ornament, describing it as "degenerate", its suppression as necessary for regulating modern society.
He took as one of his examples the tatooing of the "Papuan" and the intense surface decorations of the objects about him; Loos considers the Papuan not to have evolved to the moral and civilized circumstances of modern man, who, should he tatoo himself, would either be considered a criminal or a degenerate.

Anneke.Net > Adolf Loos > Notes and Images: A Commentary on Loos' Work
Because of their exclusive realms of influence, Loos considered art and architecture to be completely independent of one another, with only the tomb and the monument as permissible exceptions, since only they contained the ability to combine functionality with the arousal of emotion.
Characteristic of Loos is the simplicity of the decor in contrast to the richness of the materials.
Noticed the utter lack of decoration on the building (other than the windowboxes Loos was forced to put in place by those in charge of zoning, etc.)-- Loos was criticized for the simplicity of the building, in that the it seemed to be out of place, in conflict with the surroundings.

Loos argued against decoration by pointing to economic and historical reasons for its development, and by describing the suppression of decoration as necessary to the regulation of passion.

Yet despite the striking simplicity of his exteriors, Loos' interiors were decorated comfortably, using beautiful materials and elegant details.
One of his most attractive projects, the Müller Villa in Prague, built in 1930 and restored in 2003, was the culmination of his pioneering "Raumplan" concept – designing continuous spaces for living rather than regularly divided floors with limited flexibility.
Loos rarely designed furniture – he was more inclined to adapt tried and tested earlier designs, such as the knieschwimmer armchair he placed in several interiors designed in the 1920s.

 TASCHEN Books: Adolf Loos
Widely regarded as one of the most significant prophets of modern architecture, Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a star in his own time, known throughout Vienna as an outspoken, audacious dandy and moralist who defied the establishment.
His work not only represented the beginning of modernism, with its stark, unornamented style, but also revolutionized architecture by introducing the concept of "spatial plan" architecture, which allowed for economizing space by designating rooms` sizes and heights based on their purposes.
Loos also published numerous essays during his lifetime, the most notable of which is the oft-misunderstood "Ornament and Crime."
