House of Holstein-Gottorp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its founder was Adolf, the half-brother of King Christian III of Denmark and Norway.
A descendant of cadet branch of the dukes of Holstein-Gottorp, Adolf Frederick was closely related to several members of the Russian Imperial Family, and later his niece Catherine the Great would even become Empress and founder of the House of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov.
Adolf Frederick's grandson Gustav IV Adolf was deposed in 1809 following the loss of Finland, and the remaining parts of the dynasty became extinct with the death of his uncle Charles XIII in 1818.

On the death in 1459 of Adolf VII, son of Gerhard VI, the line of the counts of Schauenburg became extinct, and the estates of Schleswig and of Holstein elected in 1460 as duke and count the Danish King Christian of the Oldenburg dynasty, who was the sob of Adolf's sister.
For in the course of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, especially during the rule of the counts of Holstein, the bishops had ceased to be independent of the dukes; from vassals of the king they had become vassals of the dukes and had sunk into mere local bishops.
All connexion with Holstein was set aside, a custom-house was erected on the Eider, Danish preachers, teachers, and troops were sent into Schleswig, while the German soldiers and officers were brought into Danish garrisons, and lastly Danish was made the language of the Church and schools.

SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN QUESTION - LoveToKnow Article on SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN QUESTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
On Schleswig the Schauenburg counts had no claim; their election in Holstein would have separated the countries; and it was easy therefore for Christian to secure his election both as duke of Schleswig and count of Holstein (5 March 1460).
The Holstein estates appealed to the German parliament, which hotly took up their cause; but it was soon clear that the central government had no means of enforcing its views, and in the end the convention was ratified at Frankfort.
In Holstein an agitation in his favor had begun from the first, and this was extended to Schleswig on the terms of the new Danish constitution becoming known.

On the death of Gustavus III., Charles, now duke of Sudermania, acted as regent of Sweden till 1796; but the real ruler of the country was the narrow-minded and vindictive Gustaf Adolf Reuterholm (q.v.), whose mischievous influence over him was supreme.
These four years were perhaps the most miserable and degrading in Swedish history (an age of lead succeeding an age of gold, as it has well been called) and may be briefly described as alternations of fantastic jacobinism and ruthless despotism.

In 1575 van Groningen made a decorative rail for an organ that Duke Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp (1526–82) and his wife had commissioned from the Schleswig organ builder Goos for the Marienkirche in Husum.
The church at Pellworm houses the epitaph that van Groningen made for Thomas Elersen: a panel depicting the Crucifixion is framed by wooden columns; God the Father is represented at the top of the frieze; fragments of polychrome painting are still visible.
Van Groningen almost certainly had a hand in the decoration of the new castle that the Duke Adolf built between 1567 and 1582 on the site of the abbey at Husum; he probably entered the Duke’s service in 1582, remaining in it for 22 years.

Bielogradsky’s name lived on until the 1840s in German musical dictionaries; in 1841 he was referred to as ‘one of the esteemed lutenists of the instrument’s last period’.
