Henselt, Alkan Piano Concertos [AB]: Classical CD Reviews- Oct 2002 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The contrary is the case for the many romantic piano concertos which are designed to show of the skill of the pianist and be pleasing to the audience by the use of catchy tunes.
Henselt was born in Bavaria and became one of the greatest pianists of the nineteenth century — helped by almost non-stop practice (however his almost pathological shyness resulted in him seldom playing in public).
Whilst Henselt as a composer had nothing to say after the age of thirty, this was not the case of his almost exact contemporary Charles-Valentin Morhange (who adopted the surname of ‘Alkan’).

A virtuoso in his day, Henselt is now relegated to the designation of a minor composer of the same era as Schumann and Chopin.
If further interested, please note that Henselt's Piano Concerto is available through the Hyperion Romantic Piano Concerto series, and there is also an MDG disc devoted to a combination of his solo piano and chamber music.
I doubt that Henselt's discography will ever be extensive, but his music would represent a worthy addition to one's music library.

 Henselt: Piano Études
Adolf von Henselt was one of the greatest virtuosi of the nineteenth century.
His trail-blazing études — at once impossibly challenging for the performer and ardently lyrical for the listener — were to influence a generation of composers, especially in Russia where Henselt settled.
Having studied with Hummel in Weimar, the ‘Henselt piano technique’ is now regarded as the link between that of the older composer and that to be developed by Franz Liszt.

A delightful genre that has faded from use during this century, a preambule (often called "prelude"), was a very short piece played before a larger work to prepare the listener for the tonality and mood to follow.
Among the most beautiful and effective is Henselt's set of twenty-four which covers all major and minor keys.

Combine Chopin's scinitllating virtuoso piano writing with the lush textural doublings and orchestrally inspired chord deployment Schumann favored, and you'll get an inkling of what Adolf von Henselt's 24 piano etudes sound like--and for that matter, what they feel like under the fingers.
Although Henselt's etudes may not always be the most harmonically interesting works in this genre, their pianistic substance and seriousness of intent hold your attention.
