Adolf Eichmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eichmann's transfer was granted in November of 1934, as he was promoted to the rank of Oberscharführer and assigned to the headquarters of the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) in Berlin.
Eichmann's office was expanded in late 1939 to cover the entirety of the German Reich, and Eichmann was transferred from the SD to the Gestapo in 1940.
Eichmann's work had been noticed, and in 1944, he was sent to Hungary after Germany had occupied that country in fear of a Soviet invasion.

 Adolf Eichmann
Eichmann's acquired expertise in "forced emigration"--in less than eighteen months approximately 150,000 Jews left Austria--and extortion was to prove an ideal training-ground for his later efficiency in "forced evacuation," i.e., the registering, assembly and deportation of Jews to extermination centres in the East.
For the next six years Eichmann's office was the headquarters for the implementation of the 'Final Solution'; though it was not until the summer of 1941 that his 'resettlement' department began the task of creating death camps, developing gassing techniques and organizing the system of convoys that were to take European Jewry to their deaths.
Though arrested at the end of the war, Eichmann's name was not yet widely known and he was able to escape from an American internment camp in 1946 and flee to Argentina.

Eichmann was entranced by the symbols of the Fatherland, and the promise of renewal.
Eichmann turns to the classics again for the quotation to be placed on the frontspiece of his memoir, suggesting a passage from Plato's cave parable: "And he would consider his shadow world as true, but the real world as an illusion." Above all, Eichmann seems to be writing from a sense of mission.
Eichmann insisted he was not personally anti-Semitic, described the Holocaust as the greatest crime in history, and attempted to portray himself as an unwilling accomplice, a cog in the mighty Nazi wheel, "a playball of circumstances".

Yet, when we examine the life of Adolf Eichmann, the SS officer who oversaw the logistics of the Holocaust, and whose prison memoirs are finally to be made public, we see a glimpse of the darkness at the soul of a man.
Eichmann learned Hebrew, visited pre-war Palestine and, after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938, he was involved in organising the deportation of the Jews from Germany.
Adolf Eichmann's tragedy lies not in that he willed himself to do evil but that, because of his unquestioning loyalty to the state, he was unable to think for himself, to comprehend the magnitude of his crimes.

Many who thought she was on to an important aspect of evil in the Twentieth Century attempted to apply the phrase outside its original context, to the activities of individuals everywhere in organizations and bureaucracies that disperse responsibility for action done in the name of an organization or government agency.
Eichmann became a symbol of bureaucratic evil, referred to as a “desk murderer.” But the controversy that followed publication of Eichmann in Jerusalem and the subsequent appropriation of Arendt’s subtitle muddled her actual insight, as she herself well knew.
Because of the context of Eichmann in Jerusalem and its intention to be a report on a trial, philosophic understanding of Arendt’s insight is better grounded in her later work.

For her the story of Eichmann and the story of his trial are important primarily for what they reveal to us about the nature of justice and about the attempts, deliberate and otherwise to pervert it.
The Importance of Precedent Arendt's second important point, which arises directly from her preoccupation with individual responsibilities to the human community, is that the Eichmann trial failed properly to recognize the complexity of the legal issues it was dealing with.

Yet Eichmann made the trains run on time, knowing full well eventually that these trains were destined for the crematoria and the deaths of "millions of Jews" (note: let all Holocaust revisionists take note that Eichmann did not object to the numbers of Jews who were murderered by the Nazis but candidly admitted them).
