Adolph von Menzel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (8 December 1815-9 February 1905) was a German artist noted for drawings, engravings, and paintings.
His father was at the head of a school for girls, and intended to educate his son as a professor; but he would not thwart his taste for art.
By these works Menzel established his claim to be considered one of the first, if not actually the first, of the illustrators of his day in his own line.

Canadian Journal of History: Adolph Menzel 1805-1905: Between Romanticism and Impressionism
Like his close friend Theodor Fontane, Menzel was of middle-class background, and developed his prodigious talents during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, witnessing the revolutions of 1848, the unification of Germany, and the anxious nationalism of the Kaiserreich.
Menzel began this painting of factory workers in 1872, in the midst of Germany's surge of industrialization following unification; in preparation he completed over a hundred pencil studies of workers and machines.
Menzel went to the scene of the fighting at Koeniggratz and there witnessed the carnage; his artistic rendering of the loss of life is visually arresting and astounding.

Guardian Unlimited | Arts critics | Review: Paintings from Berlin's Nationalgalerie, National Gallery
His output was enormously varied, ranging from these everyday scenes to gaslit nights at the theatre, Wilhelm I passing along the Unter den Linden in his carriage, the populace looking on, the flags strangled on their poles in the breeze.
Such scenes of modern life are complemented by creepy paintings of fragments of life-casts and death masks hung on Menzel's studio wall, viewed in the flickering candlelight.
To move from this painting to Menzel's dinner at a crowded ball, the dripping gilded scene, the tiaras, dresses, chandeliers, is a delirious, vertiginous shift.
