 MNHS.ORG : Governors of Minnesota | A. O. (Adolph Olson) Eberhart
Elected the youngest member of the state senate in 1902, the Republican Eberhart was chosen as lieutenant governor four years later in the administration of the legendary Democrat, John A. Johnson.
An efficient administrator, Eberhart was also a consummate politician, and his detractors, including many Republicans, questioned his sincerity as well as the reputation of certain close associates.
Eberhart's strategy worked; he avoided the censure of his own party and was re-nominated for a second full term in the first statewide primary.

Gov. Carlson's Capitol portrait strikes new, contemporary note
The portrait of Gov. Floyd B. Olson, Minnesota's 22nd governor, is one of the most interesting of the series.
Olson, a third party governor with "a genius for inspiring hope during frightening times," an accurate description of the Great Depression, is painted grasping a large 1930s era microphone.
The confidence which radiates from Olson's eyes implies he could use that outlandish-sized microphone to reach out to others, or wield its heft like a club.

The fact is, independently of the interception of flight 77, the crisis situation that existed that day demanded maximum air defense protection over Washington.
This activity would have fallen to Saint Andrews Air Force Base, just as General Eberhart, CO of NORAD had already activated the SCATANA plan and had taken control of the New York airspace in order to position fighters there.
For the military, from the moment they were alerted of flight 77s disappearance, which was, indeed, the moment the transponders were turned off, and NOT when the FAA supposedly got around to calling them, it was not a question of speculating that they were dealing with a mechanical failure.
