But Carlyle himself admits that Thiers is "a brisk man in his way, and will tell you much if you know nothing." Coming as the book did just when the reaction against the revolution was about to turn into another reaction in its favor, it was assured of success.
Thiers himself was one of the souls of the actual revolution, being credited with "overcoming the scruples of Louis-Philippe", perhaps no Herculean task.

Although one of the founders of the regime, Thiers helped undermine the July Monarchy by supporting the repressive September laws as minister of the interior in 1835, by voicing opposition to Guizot's tepid foreign policy and by the inflexibility of his domestic policy in the 1840s.
Forced from power in May 1873 by the royalist majority in the national assembly, Thiers remained in parliament until 1876 as the leader of the center-left and voted in favor of the republican constitution of 1875.

Thiers had long been married, and his wife and sister-in-law, Mile Dosne, were his constant companions; but he left no children, and had had only one —a daughter— who long predeceased him.

Stylistically, the drawing is similar to hundreds of pencil portraits by Ingres, which combine a precisely drawn likeness of the sitter's face and head with a swift yet accurate sketch of his or her body, posture, and clothes, creating an astute observation of class, character, and personality.
The Oberlin drawing of Madame Thiers was done in Paris in July 1834 around the time of Ingres's appointment as Director of the Académie de France in Rome.
When Adolphe Thiers, the Minister of the Interior, announced a search for a replacement for Horace Vernet as Director of the Rome Académie, Ingres immediately joined the group of seven artists seeking the post.
