Bouguereau was always eager to include children in his works and he here altered the figure playing Bacchus from the traditional young man to a small child.
In 1881 Bouguereau was commissioned to provide decorations for the Chapelle de la Vierge of the St Vincent-de-Paul church in Paris (in situ).
In addition to his better-known figure works, Bouguereau was also admired for his portraits, one of the most striking being Aristide Boucicart (1875; Paris, Bon Marché Col.), a stern three-quarter-length portrait of the founder of the famous Bon Marché store in Paris.

ADOLPHE WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU (1825-1905), French painter, was born at La Rochelle on the 30th of November 1825.
Bouguereau's pictures, highly appreciated by the general public, have been severely criticized by the partisans of a freer and fresher style of art, who have reproached him with being too content to revive the formulas and subjects of the antique.
At the Paris Exhibition of 1867 Bouguereau took a third-class medal, in 1878 a medal of honour, and the same again in the Salon of 1885.

Bouguereau’s re-appreciation can rather accurately be traced from about 1979 when his prices at auction quadrupled that year alone, and then was further catapulted by the 1984 retrospective that traveled from the Petite Palais in Paris, to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada and finally to the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford.
Bouguereau achieves emotional power in his work second to none, and for the themes he loved, beyond any other in art history.

A student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and his realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were exhibited in the annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon for his entire working life.
In his own time, Bouguereau was considered to be one of the greatest painters on earth.
Some assert this may have been consciously engineered by the new "art expert establishment", who resented his former opposition to new developments in painting, but it is likely that more profound societal factors were instrumental to this enormous shift in taste and sensibility.

Four works by Adolphe-William Bouguereau, one of the most popular and controversial artists of the 19th century, were on display at the Getty Center, West Pavilion, through June 15, 2006.
Replicas were economical for Bouguereau to produce because they sold well and spared him the labor of creating a new composition.
The installation lets us compare Bouguereau's paintings to one another and to those of his more avant-garde contemporaries Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Cézanne, which are displayed in the adjoining gallery.

 William-Adolphe Bouguereau (Getty Museum)
Along with Alexandre Cabanel, William-Adolphe Bouguereau was the most influential upholder of the conservative values of French academic art in his day.
His paintings stress those values: precise drawing, contour, and finish, along with strict adherence to the rules of anatomy, perspective, academic modeling, and physiognomic expression in which internal character is revealed by outward appearance.
Bouguereau's academic renderings were highly regarded by many of his contemporaries, but they were exactly what the Impressionists rebelled against.

 MAM - Collection - 19th Century Art - William-Adolphe Bouguereau
Carrying on the Neoclassical tradition of David and Ingres, William-Adolphe Bouguereau dominated French academic painting of the late 19th century.
Before becoming identified with beautifully crafted, albeit sentimental, images of women and children, Bouguereau concentrated on elevated religious and mythological subjects that historically were the acme of pictorial subject matter.
Thus by giving visual expression to Chenier’s poem, Bouguereau also subtly managed to demonstrate his ideological support of academic painting.
