adonitol vs. glycerol hydrated radius   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)

Adonitol perfuses well for a molecule of its >size because its cross section is no larger than that of glycerol, so it >can pass through pores in cell membranes.
It might be profitable to compare the hydrophobicity of adonitol with that of glycerol.

Method for isolation and identification of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and plating media for said process - Patent 6617149
Hence, the observance of blue with fl percipitate colonies on the surface of the plating medium is a direct indication of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and a presumptive identification.
Microbial fermenting of sorbitol, adonitol, salicin and inositol changes the pH of the medium, thus producing colonies influenced by the indicator dye, i.e.
Other carbohydrates which are not fermented by Escherichia coli 0157:H7, but are by certain other strains of Escherichia coli, are salicin, inositol and adonitol, and these compositions and sorbitol, or a mixture thereof, have been found suitable for the carbohydrate ingredient of the plating media.

Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions- December 1998 Abstracts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Cosmids carrying genes involved in utilization of rhamnose, sorbitol, and adonitol were isolated from a genomic library of Rhizobium leguminosarum by complementation of plasmid-cured derivatives of strain Rlt100 that were unable to grow on these carbon sources.
Transposon mutagenesis was used to identify regions of each cosmid necessary for catabolism of the respective carbon source; partial DNA sequencing, as well as analysis of gene fusions created with transposon Tn5-B20, helped to determine the orientation and possible function of genes required for growth on the three substrates.
While sorbitol and adonitol catabolic mutants were unaltered in their competitive behavior, the nodulation competitiveness of three different rhamnose utilization mutants was significantly impaired.

 BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERS
The usual reactions include: (1) fermentation of glucose, maltose, mannitol and sorbitol with the production of acid and gas; (2) absence of fermentation of salicin, sucrose and adonitol; (3) failure to produce indole, to hydrolyse urea or to deaminate phentlalanine; and (4) a positive methyl-red reaction and a negative Voges-Proskauer reaction.
Lactose, sucrose, salicin and adonitol are not fermented.
S.choleraesuis and some strains of S.typhi do not ferment arabinose, whereas choleraesuis, the pullorum biotype of gallinarum, most strains of S.typhi and some strains of paratyphi A and paratyphi B do not ferment dulcitol.

Alditol ester derivatives of triclopyr, their preparation and herbicidal use thereof - Patent 4963173
In some instances the instant compounds have herbicidal activity equal to or greater than triclopyr or its commercially available ester or sodium or amine salts, while exhibiting excellent tolerance by cedreal grains particularly wheat, barley and rice.
Of the compounds according to the invention, those prepared from the acetal of glycerol or from the acetonides of the pentitols, arabitol, adonitol and xylitol are of particular interest, more particularly those prepared from acetonides of arabitol and xylitol.
When evolution of carbon dioxide ceased, the mixture was added dropwise to a solution of 2,4-methylene adonitol (3.2 g, 0.0195 mole) in dry tetrahydrofuran (70 ml).

Adonitol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Adonitol and glycerol are part of the homologous series of fully hydroxylated alkanes: methanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, adonitol.
The general trend in this series is one of decreasing hydrophobicity, decreasing permeation, decreasing glass forming ability, and increasing viscosity.
Even if adonitol did penetrate well, I still wouldn't be excited by it unless it was a better glass former and less viscous in solution than glycerol.

 ENTEROTUBEII - DESCRIPTIONS
Indole formation (IND): The production of indole from the metabolism of tryptophan by the bacterial enzyme tryptophanase is detected by the development of a pink to red color after the addition of Kovacs' indole reagent, which is injected into the compartment after 16 to 24 h incubation of the tube.
Adonitol (ADON): Bacterial fermentation of adonitol, which results in the formation of acidic end products, is indicated by a change in color of the indicator present in the medium from red (alkaline) to yellow (acidic).
Any sign of yellow should be interpreted as a positive reaction; orange should be considered negative.
