  Adoptianism - LoveToKnow 1911
There is thus a traceable historical connexion between the early adoptian controversy and the struggle in Spain at the end of the 8th century, to which that name is usually given.
It was indeed only a renewal, under new conditions, of the conflict between two types of thought, the rational and the mystical, the school of Antioch and that of Alexandria.
Felix introduced adoptian views into that part of Spain which belonged to the Franks, and Charlemagne thought it necessary to assemble a synod at Regensburg (Ratisbon), in 792, before which the bishop was summoned to explain and justify the new doctrine.

Thus they did not teach a dual personality, nor the old Antiochene view that Christ’s divine exaltation was due to his sinless virtue; they were less concerned with old disputes than with the problem as the Chalcedon decision had left it—the relation of Christ’s one personality to his two natures.
Elipapdus, secure in his see at Toledo, never swerved from the adoptian views, which, however, were almost universally abandoned after the two leaders died.

Adoptianism in Herzog’s R.-E., 2nd Ed.) has stated, on the basis of Gam’s discoveries, a conjecture that is worth noting: “Perhaps we ought to regard the orthodox brethren in Cordova extolled by Elipandus (Er).
But the Adoptians had, consistently with this likeness, which they asserted, characterised him as head of the community, and demonstrated a way in which the man Christ could be apprehended as redeemer and intercessor.
Adoptianism, like Nestorianism, necessarily remained a half thing, because it did not correct this pseudo-Christian motive.

As the theological doctrine of the Logos which bulks so largely in the writings of the apologists of the 2nd century came to the front, the trinitarian problem became acute.
Thus they did not teach a dual personality, nor the old Antiochene view that Christ's divine exaltation was due to his sinless virtue; they were less concerned with old disputes than with the problem as the Chalcedon decision had left it--the relation of Christ's one personality to his two natures.
Another synod was held at Frankfort in 794, by which the new doctrine was again formally condemned, though neither Felix nor any of his followers appeared.

S. ftb224 The well-known B. Bonosus of Sardica, who denied the perpetual virginity of Mary, is said to have also doubted the doctrine of the Godhead of Christ, and to have maintained that Christ, in His Godhead, was only adoptive Son of God.
This would be the direct opposite of the so-called adoptianism, which declared Christ to be merely adoptive Son after His human nature.
And, in fact, the Adoptians were conscious of their abrupt antagonism to the Bonosians.

 H. Orton Wiley: Christian Theology - Chapter 20
In 482 A.D., the emperor Zeno published a decree known as the Henoticon, in which both Nestorianism and Eutychianism were condemned, the Chalcedonian Creed abrogated, and the Creed of Constantinople declared to be the only standard of orthodoxy.
At Frankfort (794 A.D.) Adoptianism was condemned; at Aix-la-Chapelle (790 A.D.) it was again condemned, and in addition, Felix was deposed.
The development of ancient catholic Christology was practically closed at the time of the Sixth Ecumenical Council, held at Constantinople in 680 A.D. As we have indicated, Adoptianism and Socinianism appeared later, but these were only variations of the ancient heresies condemned by the Creed of Chalcedon.

Careful consideration by a number of church fathers and councils has led to the formulation of several credal statements on issues such as the place of the Son of God in the Trinity, the two natures of Christ and his work of reconciliation by vicarious atonement.
It also led to the rejection of heretical views such as docetism, adoptianism, modalism, subordinatianism, nestorianism, monophysitism and a kenotic Christology.
The first half of the twentieth century saw a particular interest in the historical Jesus, while currently the "Jesus seminar" led to a lively debate among theologians.

The chapter on the Trinity for instance focuses on the varying ways of interpreting the relationship of Jesus to the Father.
This includes heretic doctrines of Modalism, and Adoptianism, as well as proto-orthodox Logos-Theology, and the Nicene Trinity.
While he explains the views of those outside the catholic mainstream, even often arguing on their behalf, he (and most scholars outside of a few in the 1800s) does not believe that the heretical groups throughout history agreed on doctrine and practice (they did not) and formed an underground church.

 Charlemagne
The continuous interest taken by the king in ecclesiastical affairs was shown at the synod of Frankfurt, over which he presided in 794.
It was on his initiative that this synod condemned the heresy of adoptianism and the worship of images, which had been restored in 787 by the second council of Nicaea; and at the same time that council was declared to have been superfluous.
This policy caused a further breach with Pope Adrian; but when Adrian died in December 795, his successor, Pope Leo III, in notifying his elevation to the king, sent him the keys of St. Peter's grave and the banner of the city, and asked Charles to send an envoy to receive his oath of fidelity.
