 Mauritania Geography
The scarps also separate a series of sandstone plateaus, the highest of which is the Adrar Plateau, reaching an elevation of 500 meters.
The plateaus gradually descend toward the northeast to the barren El Djouf, or "Empty Quarter," a vast region of large sand dunes that merges into the Sahara Desert.
To the west, between the ocean and the plateaus, are alternating areas of clayey plains (regs) and sand dunes (ergs), some of which shift from place to place, gradually moved by high winds.

The Adrar Mountains, Mauritania - Chasing the Lizard’s Tail
The town of Atâr lies on the western cusp of the Adrar massif, of which it is the regional capital as well as its largest settlement (it has a population of around 20,000).
The Adrar, together with the adjoining Tagant Mountains, is the historic heartland of Mauritania, and effectively shelters Atâr from both the trade wind and the Harmattan, and therefore from most of the sand.
The Adrar is one of the Sahara's six major microcosms, and is without doubt Mauritania's most important agricultural region, producing dates, millet, sorghum, barley, watermelons, tobacco and vegetables, albeit in quantities nowhere near large enough to make any impression on Mauritania's massive import requirements.

Notable among these were the amirs of Trarza, Brakna, and Adrar, the three most powerful men in the colony, who were aided by 50 heads of smaller groups and the more than 800 chiefs of factions and subfractions.

It is not enough, he claims, and in the past families have sold books or left Chinguetti because of economic hardship; often leaving the books stored in poor conditions.
