Hormone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The function of hormones is to serve as a signal to the target cells; the action of hormones is determined by the pattern of secretion and the signal transduction of the receiving tissue.
Hormone actions vary widely, but can include stimulation or inhibition of growth, induction or suppression of apoptosis (programmed cell death), activation or inhibition of the immune system, regulating metabolism and preparation for a new activity (e.g., fighting, fleeing, mating) or phase of life (e.g., puberty, caring for offspring, menopause).
A recently-identified class of hormones is that of the "Hunger Hormones" - ghrelin, orexin and PYY 3-36 - and "Satiety hormones" - e.g., leptin, obestatin.

After being released by neurosecretory cells of the brain, the thoracotropic hormone is carried by the blood to the prothoracic glands, where it stimulates the release of ecdysone in insects or crustecdysone in crustaceans, steroid hormones that initiate molting (the periodic shedding of the outer skeleton).

Adrenocorticotropic hormone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH or corticotropin) is a polypeptide hormone synthesised (from POMC, pre-opiomelanocortin) and secreted from corticotropes in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response to the hormone corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) released by the hypothalamus.
ACTH acts through the stimulation of cell surface ACTH receptors, which are primarily located on the adrenocortical cells.
Together with ACTH the hormones lipotropin, melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), β-endorphin and met-enkephalin are also released.

 Diagnose-Me: Treatment: ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone)
One hormone which has been shown to shorten the duration and intensity of acute exacerbations is adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a pituitary gland substance that stimulates the adrenal glands to produce additional cortisone, which acts to reduce the inflammation in the brain or spinal cord.
Hormones signal certain enzymes to perform their functions and, in this way, regulate such body functions as blood sugar levels, insulin levels, the menstrual cycle, and growth.
The pituitary gland is a small (half-inch), bean-shaped organ that hangs down from the lower center of the brain on a stalk attached to another gland, the hypothalamus.

adrenocorticotropic hormone[udrE´nOkOr´´tukOtrop´ik] Pronunciation Key, polypeptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland.
Its chief function is to stimulate the cortex of the adrenal gland to secrete adrenocortical steroids, chief among them cortisone.
ACTH secretion is an excellent example of the regulation of a biological system by a negative-feedback mechanism; high levels of adrenocortical steroids in the blood tend to decrease ACTH release, whereas low steroid levels have the opposite effect.

eMedicine - Hypopituitarism (Panhypopituitarism) : Article by James R Mulinda, MD, FACP, FACE
Normally, subphysiologic target hormone levels stimulate the pituitary gland to increase trophic hormone production; however, in hypopituitarism, the pituitary gland response is absent, suboptimal, or inappropriate with biologically inert hormone production.
The trophic hormone level may appear to be within the reference range with a corresponding subphysiologic target hormone level.
Hormonal studies should be performed in pairs of target gland and their respective stimulatory pituitary hormone for proper interpretation.

 ACTH: The Test
Addison's disease presents with symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, weight loss, increased skin pigmentation (even in areas not exposed to the sun) and loss of appetite, often accompanied by laboratory and physical signs such as low blood pressure, low blood glucose, low sodium, high potassium, and high calcium.
Findings suggestive of hypopituitarism (usually due to a benign tumor that reduces pituitary gland secretion) include loss of appetite, fatigue, irregular menstrual cycle, hypogonadism (lower levels of sex hormones), decreased sex drive, frequent nighttime urination, and weight loss.
By testing the ability of different doses of dexamethasone to stop ACTH production, it is often possible to tell if the patient has Cushing's syndrome and help determine its cause.
