	Adriaen van Ostade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Adriaen van Ostade ( 1610 - 1685, born Adriaen Hendricx) was a Dutch painter.
		Between Teniers and Ostade the contrast lies in the different condition of the agricultural classes of Brabant and Holland, and the atmosphere and dweffings that were peculiar to each region.
		Ostade was more at home in a similar effect applied to the commonplace incident of the "Slaughtering of a Pig", one of the masterpieces of 1643, once in the Gsell collection.

		Van Ostade was a prolific artist, executing his small-scale works in oil, usually on wood panels.
		Ostade and the Flemish genre painter Adriaen Brouwer may have been pupils of Frans Hals about 1627, although Hals's style was not a major influence on either of them.
		Ostade's colour schemes in his early period (1630s) are largely confined to a range of neutral bluish-grays and browns, sometimes enlivened by a single note of bright colour.

		More than 400 drawings have survived from the hand of Adriaen van Ostade, the single most important 17th century painter of Dutch peasant life.
		This development in Van Ostade's art parallels a shift in the mentality of city-dwellers, who from 1650 onwards began to view rural populations in a more positive and at times idealising light.
		In his Tavern Interior Van Ostade placed fine touches of gouache on top of the water-colour layer, producing delicate, subdued colours and a picturesque modelling.

		It shows four singers, three of whom are highlighted by the candlelight held by the man at the left; a fourth man is in the shadows upper left, and other shapes, suggesting figures, lurk in the background as well.
