Block Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Block Island is an island in the Atlantic Ocean, a fragment of glacial terminal moraine approximately ten miles off the coast of Rhode Island, of which it is part, and from which it is separated by Block Island Sound.
A historic lighthouse on the northern tip of the island was built in 1872, and a modern lighthouse, Block Island Southeast Light, is on the southeast side of the island.
Block Island is mentioned in singer Billy Joel's song Downeaster Alexa, about the plight of fishermen.

 Block Island : Introduction | Frommers.com
Unlike other such regions throughout the country that have lost their sprawling Victorian hotels to fire or demolition, Block Island has preserved many of its buildings from that time.
Clumps of hydrangeas tangle with beach roses and honeysuckle, hiding the foundations of saltboxes and Victorian farmhouses with shingles scoured gray by sea winds.
There are no squirrels, chipmunks, possums, or raccoons on the Block, but the island is in the middle of a prominent flyway for migratory birds, and egrets, ducks, goldfinch, and kingfisher are seen in abundance.

Adriaen Block -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Adriaen Block (1567–1627) was a Dutch private fur trader and navigator who explored the coastal and river valley areas between present-day New Jersey and Massachusetts during four voyages from 1611 to 1614, following the 1609 expedition by Henry Hudson.
He is noted for establishing early trade with the Native Americans, and for the 1614 map of his last voyage on which many features of the mid-Atlantic region appear for the first time, and on which the term New Netherland is first applied to the region.
Following Hudson's contact with the Native Americans in the Hudson Valley in 1609, the Dutch merchants in Amsterdam had deemed the area worth exploring as a potential source of trade for beaver pelts, which were a lucrative market in Europe at the time.

Long Island History: Block's Ship Tells Tales Centuries After the Fire
The laborer, working beneath Greenwich and Dey Streets, had found the remains of Adrian Block's ship, the Tiger, which had burned to the water line 303 years earlier as it lay at anchor in the Hudson River loaded with a rich cargo of furs.
It is the only physical proof ever discovered of Block's incredible story -- that the Tiger burned in the fall of 1613, leaving him and his crew stranded until they built a new ship.
Historians speculate that after the ship was burned to the waterline, Block's crew beached the charred hull in a small cove on the west side of what is now Greenwich Street.

In summer, Block Island’s population swells to more than 10,000, up from 800 during the rest of the year (a semi-serious census is taken every Ground Hog Day) and for that reason, runners will find the off-season the best time to visit the island.
Discovered in the 1600s by Dutch navigator Adrian Block, the island has 17 miles of pristine beaches, 365 lakes (an unbelievable number for such a tiny land mass) and many trails that make an ideal setting for a run.
Off-season, there’s little auto traffic (truly a runner’s paradise), and in general the elevation is pretty flat, ranging from sea level to a high of 300 feet.
