In 1920 Boult was appointed to the conductorship of the City of Birmingham Orchestra (later the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) and in 1930 he was made Director of Music at the BBC.
Boult accepted the conductorship of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which in the thirties under Beecham had been the other crack London orchestra, but since Beecham's departure, was in need of rebuilding.
Boult threw himself into this task and the results can be heard to this day in a long series of recordings beginning in 1950 and including in their early years a complete set of the nine Vaughan Williams symphonies and much Elgar.

Boult got excellent sound the last time around; on the present recording, it is passable, but not up to the standards that were available even at that time.
Boult's recordings of Sir Edward Elgar's best known choral works also are classics, and here it is harder to have any reservations at all.
Boult's recording is suffused with a dream-like euphoria, but not with a dream's vagueness.

One day during his tenure as conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Boult was informed that, due to budget constraints, a certain piece scored for two piccolo players would have to be performed by a soloist.
Finally, an irate Boult took his complaint to the head of the department, Charles Carpendale, who - torn between his respect for Boult and his reluctance to overrule his colleagues - pondered for a moment before proposing a compromise: "How about using one piccolo," he suggested, "and placing it closer to the microphone?"

In September 1918 the 30-year-old Adrian Boult "first caused The Planets to shine in public" as Holst himself inscribed on Boult's copy of the score.
This recording, then is surely unique; not only does it give us the great conductor's last thoughts on a work which he premiered, it is also one of the very finest recordings ever made of the work.
While the accompanying 1970 recording of Elgar's Enigma Variations, another work which Boult recorded numerous times, is not quite in the same stellar league, it is nevertheless a fine performance, and far better than his rather restrained 1962 recording.

Apparently the LSO recording by Boult is considered by CD magazines to be "Definitive", whatever that means but for sure Holst should have the best idea although that is not necessarily true.
Boult had come to believe that a fast speed was not the way to convey the horror of war.
As for Boult, he was not only a close friend of Holst--the composer called him the man who "caused the Planets to shine"--he consulted with Holst about the Planets and conducted the first performances.

Boult was well-known for performances of music by his fellow British composers, but he was often overlooked outside of that repertoire.
This disc goes along way to remedying that misconception as the Schubert and Brahms performances (all from the early 1970s) are truly first rate.
In fact the only 9ths that I personally would rank ahead of Boult's are those by Bohm, Furtwangler, Kertesz, Krips and Szell.
