To put it in bald terms, had Newey ended up moving to Jaguar, it would be the most important thing to happen in F1 for several years.
Newey, an unassuming and quietly-spoken 42-year-old, is seen as probably more crucial an ingredient in the quest for success than Michael Schumacher.
But Newey is nevertheless regarded as "The Man" when it comes to leading the design of the fastest possible car - if not necessarily the most reliable - for any given year.

Interview with Adrian Newey on his New MP4-15
Adrian Newey, the technical director of the McLaren team and creative mainspring behind their new MP4-15 car, said on Thursday that he believes it has the potential to be more competitive and reliable than its highly successful predecessor, the MP4-14.
Speaking after the unveiling of the new MP4-15 at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain, Newey was as bashful as ever but admitted that after a troubled start to the 1999 season, when car reliability was a problem for McLaren, he and his technical team had concentrated on avoiding a similar experience.
Like most members of the team's senior management and drivers, Newey heaped praise on newly arrived driver Olivier Panis, of France, whose wealth of experience, he said, had given the team far more strength in depth and relieved David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen of some of their previously intensive testing duties.

Yet, as Newey concedes, even by that time the days when a single individual was almost solely responsible for the design of a specific grand prix car had long passed.
Newey freely admits that he would be interested in designing a road car at some time in the future, but the helter-skelter intensity of life in F1 means that he is concentrating exclusively on a single ambition: to build the best grand prix car in the business for McLaren.

NewsOnF1 - Who is to blame for the Adrian Newey contract saga ?
There have been strong rumours that Newey was going to Jaguar for days before it was officially announced and surely McLaren should have acted on that quicker if they are desperate to keep Newey.
I assume, that Ron being Ron and F1 being the secretive sport that it is, Newey would have needed to give 12 months notice before leaving (ala Gustav Brunner) and there was probably a clause that said he cannot negotiate with another until say 6 months before his contract expires.
Ron Dennis and Adrian Newey have therefore gambled that while they will be punished, it will be a mere slap on the wrist.
