THE HIGH HAT | Potlatch: Adriana La Cerva
While it’s true that Adriana was the Virgin Mary compared to a stone psycho like Ralph (who preceded her into “the witness protection program”), those who came late to the party may not be aware that she was never quite the lamb she seemed to be in her latter days.
Indeed, the treatment Adriana received at the hands of the FBI is one of the big reasons she garnered so much sympathy.
Transforming into Adriana was a process akin to becoming a Klingon on “Star Trek”; it took three hours in the makeup chair before de Matteo emerged, poofy-haired and razor-nailed, the quintessential Jersey girl.

 Actor in a moll skin - TvRadio - www.theage.com.au
Adriana La Cerva, the Mafia moll otherwise known as Chris-tuh-fuh's fiancee, leans over a plate of eggs in a Manhattan coffee shop and stage-whispers her malady: "Irritable bowel syndrome." Then she slaps the table, laughs, and turns back into Drea de Matteo, the New York actress who plays Adriana on The Sopranos.
Given her secret life as a reluctant FBI informant, Adriana - whose lowly status was highlighted in an episode where Paulie Walnuts pawed through her dresser and sniffed her panties - clearly has the potential to play a pivotal role in the denouement of the series.
Adriana is the least evolved of the principal female characters.

Drea De Matteo was the logical choice to discuss Episode 12, "Long Term Parking," since, in it, her character, Adriana La Cerva, meets her maker.
We all knew it took hours putting Ade together, but to hear Drea confirm that she and her character couldn't be further apart from each other personality-wise shows how great writing, acting, directing, and, yes, wardrobe and makeup can really make a character sing.
"Adriana was the [show's] only innocent character," she repeats throughout her commentary (well, to borrow from the poet laureate known as Britney S., she's "not that innocent"), and offing her "killed the heart of the show." We'll see how dark things get in Season 6 as a result, to be sure...

Adriana, who is engaged to mob lieutenant Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli (search)), has been cooperating (reluctantly) with the FBI since last season.
A preview of this Sunday's episode had a federal agent informing Adriana that the FBI wants to plant listening devices in her nightclub, particularly in the back office where mob boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) meets with other gangsters.
Other aspects of the preview seemed to raise the possibility that Adriana could be in danger of being discovered - with possibly fatal consequences for her.

During the last season of ''The Sopranos,'' there was a lot of talk about whether the drama was misogynistic because it depicted violence against women (especially the fatal beating of a stripper and the rape of Lorraine Bracco's Dr. Melfi).
So the FBI decided to scrap the operation and immediately put the squeeze on Ade, who was told if she doesn't become a stoolie, she could face a 25-year prison term on drug charges.
Adriana's response: She vomited all over the government's table, not to mention the new Harry Winston bracelet Chrissy had given her, boasting classily, "it's got more carrots than Bugs Bunny."

08:10 PM PT As soon as it was announced that actress Drea de Matteo had signed on as a series regular for NBC's "Friends" spin-off, fans of "The Sopranos" began counting the episodes until her character -- the well-meaning, but ultimately in over her head Adriana La Cerva -- would be whacked.
However, even when her forgone demise came, it was not with the same finality as say Ralph Cifaretto's (Joey Pantoliano) dismemberment.
Instead, when henchman Silvio (Steve Van Zandt) took her into the woods Adriana's attempt to crawl away was shown, but whether the gunshots met their mark was not.

After a screen debut in an obscure independent and a small part in a small movie, Meet Prince Charming (1999), de Matteo auditioned for a one-episode part in the HBO series "The Sopranos" (1999).
She impressed the producers enough that they expanded the role, as Adriana La Cerva, girlfriend to up-and-coming Soprano family soldier Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli), and she eventually became a regular on the show.
De Matteo had the right sultry beauty to portray Adriana, but her acting skills greatly fleshed out the character, making her as rich and complex a character as a slightly ditzy gangster's girlfriend can be in the first place - humorous, even charming in a way and, ultimately, tragic.
