Adriana Lecouvreur is an opera in four acts by Francesco Cilea to an Italian libretto by Arturo Colautti, based on the play by Eugène Scribe and Gabriel Legouvé.
The opera is based on the life of the French actress Adrienne Lecouvreur (1692–1730).
Adriana uses the final lines of the text to make a headstrong attack on the Princess, who determines to have her revenge.

Waiting in the Wings, Part 2
Surely the great star of the operatic acting profession must be Adriana Lecouvreur, who in Cilea's eponymous 1902 work is drawn from a genuine historical figure, an actress at the Comédie-Français of the early 1700s.
Adriana is in love with Maurizio, whom she believes is only an employee of the Count of Saxony.
When Adriana, invited to a fête where she hopes to meet Maurizio, learns his aristocratic identity...and the Princess realizes the nature of Maurizio's new relationship, verbal daggers are drawn.

Cilea: Adriana Lecouvreur - Opera Australia/Richard Bonynge : DVD review
Adriana dates from 1902, and inevitably has a much more lush orchestration than the Donizetti and Bellini roles for which she is more famous.
Lecouvreur lived from 1692 to 1730, and in the opera she is in love with Maurice de Saxe, who is in turn betrothed to Princess Bouillon.
The final scene, in which Adriana dies from inhaling the scent of poisoned violets sent by the Princess as if they were from Maurizio (he has previously sent Adriana some violets), features ardent singing from Austin and the trademark Sutherland pathos.

Adriana Lecouvreur, Holland Park Theatre, London | | Guardian Unlimited Arts
First performed 100 years ago, Adriana Lecouvreur is the best known opera by Francesco Cilea, a younger contemporary of Puccini.
Lecouvreur was an 18th-century French actress who was notorious for an affair with Maurice, Count of Saxony, and a series of public rows with his former mistress, the married Princess de Bouillon.
The crunch comes when Adriana blurs the line between reality and art by performing a monologue from Phèdre at a soiree given by the Prince de Bouillon, inflecting the lines so as to expose his wife's adultery.

Cilea’s four-act opera of jealousy and tangled love, first performed in Milan in 1902, is based on the true-life story of Adriana Lecouvreur, an 18th-Century actress at the Comédie Française, whose rival for the love of Maurizio, Count of Saxony, is the married Principessa di Bouillon.
Mirella Freni’s portrayal of Adriana puts all of her colleagues, some of them excellent in themselves, in the shade.
'Adriana Lecouvreur: Cilea goes one step further by deliciously pitting his heroine against one of the nastiest roles in the repertoire, the literally poisonous Princesse de Bouillon, played to the hilt in a 1989 La Scala production by the redoubtably malevolent Fiorenza Cossotto.
