Adriatic Sea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Adriatic Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea separating the Italian peninsula from the Balkan peninsula, and the system of the Apennine Mountains from that of the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges.
The deepest part of the sea lies east of Monte Gargano, south of Dubrovnik, and west of Durrës where a large basin gives depths of 900 m (500 fathoms) and upwards, and a small area in the south of this basin falls below 1,460 m (800 fathoms).
The islands, which are long and narrow (the long axis lying parallel with the coast of the mainland), rise rather abruptly to elevations of a few hundred feet, with the exception of a few larger islands like Brač (Vidova gora, 778 m) or the peninsula Pelješac (St. Ilija, 961 m).

The Adriatic Sea (ancient Adria or Hadria) (Serbo-Croatian Jadransko more, Slovenian Jadransko morje, Latin Mare Hadriaticum) is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea separating the Apennine peninsula (Italy) from the Balkan peninsula, and the system of the Apennine mountains from that of the Dinaric Alps and adjacent ranges.
The Adriatic extends northwest from 40° to 45° 45' N., with an extreme length of about 480 miles (770 kilometers), and a mean breadth of about 100 miles (160 kilometers), but the Strait of Otranto, through which it connects at the south with the Ionian Sea, is only 45 miles wide.
The northern part of the sea is very shallow, and between the southern promontories of Istria and Rimini the depth rarely exceeds 25 fathoms.

Major, Minor and Trace Elements in Surficial Sediments from the Open Adriatic Sea: A Regional Geochemical Study, ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Results indicate that major, minor and several trace elements are strongly related to the catchment geology, their distribution being essentially controlled by the type of sediments.
However, the majority of trace elements are believed to have been introduced into the Adriatic from the riverine inflows that are also affected by the impact of industrial, mining and urban wastes.
The regional distribution patterns are influenced by the counter-clockwise system of the Adriatic Sea currents which carry these elements away from the riverine inflows.

As a result of this renaissance, the Adriatic Sea and its sub-basins are currently the object of intensified scrutiny by a number of scientific teams, in Europe and beyond.

For example, the Adriatic Sea is divided in three basins according to their main topographic and dynamical features: northern, middle and southern.

Citebase - Mass balance of trace metals in the Adriatic Sea
The Adriatic Sea appeared to be a source of dissolved Cu, Mn and Fe for the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Otranto whereas for dissolved Zn and Pb the Adriatic Sea appeared to be a net sink.
This was related to diagenetic processes involving the utilisation and solubilisation of Mn and Fe oxides, which occur in the surface of the sediment in the northern Adriatic Sea.
In the central Adriatic Sea, remobilization of Mn and Fe was less than in the northern Adriatic Sea, suggesting that diagenesis processes appear deeper in the sediment.
