Adrienne Lecouvreur (1692-1730) really existed, and she really was an actress at the Comédie Française - the most famous of her day.
It is said that she single-handedly revolutionised the acting style of the time by delivering her lines in a manner akin to natural speech, with inflections and dramatic pauses, rather than chant her verses in the way that was customary on stage.
When Adrienne died, at the age of 38, shortly after this incident, this gave rise to some of the mystery surrounding her demise.
