Harlan Ellison Webderland: Book Reviews -
So he had run off, when he was in his teens, and alone always alone on the road” -- plus a failed marriage to a woman with a son from an earlier marriage.
Locked in combat with a man as wily as herself, she accidentally killed him and is now on the lam in a cheap, sea-green ’51 Packard she bought with the cash she was able to find on the body.
Then suddenly he is Talbot, and we are off into the main story with hardly a glance back at Moby and Ahab, and no explanation of why they were there.

 Ellison / Deathbird Stories
But the real triumph lies in several newer tales -- principally, "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs," "Adrift Just Off the Islets of Langerhans" and the title story, a retelling of Genesis from the serpent's viewpoint -- that show Ellison entering whole new realms of imagination, innovation and self-assurance.
No Ellison collection before or since has been so eloquent and revelatory.

The Templeton Gate - Authors - Harlan Ellison
Harlan is very passionate and protective of his work, and this was just one of many incidents which has placed him at the top of the list both as a writer sought-after, and also as one many producers wish to avoid.
I do not mean to imply they are inferior to his fiction; on the contrary, in most cases they are just as entertaining, informative, and meaningful, but if the reader is not in the proper frame of mind and attuned to Harlan's peculiar take on "the way things are," then they could be a turn-off.
One of his biggest gripes is against what he terms "cultural amnesia," wherein the majority of the population - and not just younger readers either - cannot recognize cultural and historical references that predate their own existence.

I suppose it may be a bit entertaining to just simply load up a level, and hack away with no attempt to complete the required tasks.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately, how a person could lose themselves for one second, let go of everything for just a moment, and in that moment, become so disoriented that they will never be the same again.
But that did not help, for just being in his presense was enough to force understanding on her: that his bravado was fueled by his insecurities and aspirations, that he masturbated nightly and with self-loathing, that he despised his parents and longed in vain for the least sign of love from them.
That the way he treated her was the sum and total of all this and more.

Not for its geek value (it starts off all about computers and what-not which I don't mind, but some might) but for the interesting look into Summerian myths and thoughts on speech and language development.
I just didn't feel fulfilled after finishing them, but they were interesting enough that I spent time afterward thinking about all the more interesting ways things COULD have gone.
First off, I really liked "Perdido Street Station", but the two other books (King Rat [seems *real* derivative of Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere"] & The Scar [just kind of a letdown, the ending is inconclusive and getting I couldn't really relate to the main character]) I read by China Mievelle were sort of a letdown.

ULTIMATE WEREWOLF, THE by Byron Preiss - The Dark Spiral   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Comment: Not all the short stories in this anthology are uniformly amazing.
For instance, Ellison's own about Lawrence Talbot's search for his soul, "Adrift Just Off the Islets of Langerhans," is just plain *wierd.* (And, no, I don't mean that in a nice way.) There are several stories about policemen/ werewolves, kind of an interesting angle, including the great "Partners" by Robert Randisi.
Also special is "Pure Silver" by AC Crispin and Kathleen O'Malley about the relationship between a homeless man/ Holocaust survivor/ werewolf and an animal shelter worker and her K9 cop boyfiend.
