Though work has been done on the estuary of the Adur, it is the object of this paper to put forward new evidence, and to use it to offer a fresh interpretation of the problem and, by implication, of the origin of the coastal features of Sussex as a whole.
The action of the waves, dragging down the shingle of the beach on one wave and throwing it up on the next, has the effect, on a coast where the winds are derived dominantly from the west and south-west, of driving the beach material slowly east in a zigzag motion along the shore.

Adur World Oceans Day a unique opportunity to introduce children to the mysterious undersea and seashore world with displays of live fish, lobsters and crabs, and a variety of exhibits on the ocean environment, including talks designed for young students, and video and computer displays and interactive displays and competitions to keep the children occupied.

Prior to that people and animals were pulled from one side of the estuary to the other on a flat raft - a "pad" that may have given the name to a well-known hostelry nearby.
A bid for £250,000 has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund and a bid for £50,000 to English Heritage and West Sussex County Council has set aside £100,000, leaving £100,000 to be raised by the community: residents, schools, special interest groups and businesses in Shoreham, the surrounding district and beyond.
Virtually every special interest group and community association, Adur District Council and West Sussex County Council and a number of businesses have joined the recently formed Toll Bridge Community Partnership.

A competition was held in the local paper for a name for the band, (see article), and suggested names of "Adur Rhythmics", "Aunt Adur’s Band", "Harbour Lights" and "Adur no strings" were rejected before the name "The Adur Band" was finally decided upon.
The Adur Band is affiliated to Making Music, which represents and supports amateur performing and promoting societies throughout the UK.

There is good news for voluntary organisations in Adur wishing to apply for grant support from statutory organisations serving the area.
Working through, and under the auspice of the Adur in Partnership Health and Social Care Local Planning Group (LPG), the three organisations have developed and launched a new process, which will enable voluntary groups to be considered for grant support through the completion of only one application form.
Local voluntary organisations providing help to people in Adur with a range of health and social care needs, can now apply for funding if they are working in support of any of five key priority areas of need, agreed by the LPG.

The purpose of the Strategy study was to establish a sustainable policy for the management of coastal defences between the Rivers Arun and Adur over the next 50 years.
Whilst the Coast Protection Authoriy for the frontage between Western Road, Lancing and Shoreham Harbour is Adur D.C., it is managed by the Environment Agency, as is a short length of coast at Ferring Rife, under its permissive power given in the Water Resources Act 1991.
Because the existing breakwater is effectively a complete barrier to shingle transport, none of the development proposals have significance for coastal defences to the west.

This week the direct dial anti social behaviour telephone hotline into the Safer Adur Team went live and is now assisting us with our aims of combating this problem in the community.
The success of the Safer Adur Team is going from strength to strength evidenced by the numbers of anti social behaviour contracts (ABC's) agreed by predominately young people in Adur and the increase in full anti social behaviour orders granted by the local Magistrate Court.

These predicted high concentrations are as much as a consequence of high background levels of nitrogen dioxide and PM10, due to the volume of traffic in the south-east and pollution originating further afield in continental Europe, than local sources of air pollution.
To ensure that the concentrations of these pollutants do not exceed the specified targets it would be prudent for Adur District Council, working in partnership with the community and other agencies, to develop and adopt a strategy that attempts to at least maintain the status quo.
Given that predicted concentrations are close to the air quality targets the nitrogen dioxide monitoring network is to be extended.

Extensive urban area including the coastal towns of Shoreham, Southwick and Lancing, and the inland town of Steyning and countryside villages
It had received damage after the gales in July 2004, but it has now been destroyed as an important landmark and this was the best tree in the whole of the Adur district.
